モノリスの謎と言えば、それは私にとってオンジアザーサイドを指します。永遠の序曲、暗黒への曳航のそれぞれのアルバムトップの曲に比べると、暗い曲調かもしれませんが、私にとってはいかにもカンサス!とうつるのです。それ以外の曲については、あまり印象に残る曲がないかなぁ。というよりもオンジアザーサイドの印象が強すぎて、他の曲が死んじゃってるような気がします。私の気のせいだといいんですけどね。

この年’７９年は、ディスコ路線かＡＯＲ路線かの２択に分かれた年であった。ＫｉｓｓはＡＬＩＶＥIIというライヴで一段落しＤｙｎａｓｔｙでディスコ・ナンバー⇒【ラヴィン・ユー・ベイビー】を、ロッド氏も同様に【アイム・セクシー】を、ドナ・サマーの【ホット・スタッフ】もこの年。
ＥＬＯのアルバム《ディスカバリー》、ＳＴＹＸの《コーナーストーン》ではよりポップにキラキラと輝くサウンドがヒット。ＳａｎｔａｎａはＦｕｓｉｏｎ寄りの【マラソン】でやはり以前よりもポップに。
そんな中、このＫａｎｓａｓ。（ファンからは＃２のシングルが不調だったが）一部で安易なアレンジによる売れ線に走った感はやや否めないが、私としては聞きやすかった。実際ＣＤに買い替えてもその気持ちは変わらない。バリエーションの豊かさでは他の追随を許さないことが改めてわかった。
＃１＞ショート・カットしてでもシングル向き。間奏での変拍子~ヴァイオリン・ソロ~ギター・ソロへのつなぎはＫａｎｓａｓらしい。
＃３＞途中よりＳ・ウォルシュに歌がスウィッチ、後半では充分に聴かせてくれる。この見事な表現力は後⇒’８８の『レインメーカー』まで待たねばならない、それほどの素晴らしい歌唱力だと思う。エンディングでは、ヴァイオリンで締めくくる。
＃４＞マイナー・キー。こういった仕掛けもＫａｎｓａｓの技、Ｐフロイドも好きだがこちらのスピード感は、たまらない。
＃５＞メジャー・キー。少し音作りがＥＬＯっぽいが、ＣＤとなり前の曲（＃４）との対比が際立ち、より魅力が増したと思う。
個人的には、この４曲がこのアルバムの聴きどころです。全５枚からのファンにはもの足りないでしょうが、当時高校生の私には理解しやすいアメリカン・プログレ・ハードでした。各曲の演奏時間が、短かすぎず長すぎずでｇｏｏｄです。（捨て曲があるため★は４つ）

いろんな意味でほとんどやり尽くしたバンドであることは確か。このへんで十分な充電期間＋休養が必要。クリエイティブな面でもピークを経験したこのバンドは成功によりツアーも念入りにやらなくてはいけないし、ある意味金属疲労もピークに達していた模様。なので、やはり『元気がない』。曲も悪くはないのだが、かといってこれというのがあるかというとない印象。ラジオのエアプレーを商魂まるだしでねらい撃ちした＜２＞などはちょっと恥ずかしい。すべて出し切った後のバンドのアルバムであり、やはり『次のアイディアがまとまるまで』充電しないとね、中途半端なアルバムリリースしてしまいやばいよ。ポテンシャルをすべてだしきってしまった状態で録音はよくないよ。
