さっそくだけど、ジャケ写変わった？僕が持ってる昔からのはアートが正面向きでつまんだもの口に含んでいたような気がするけど？（今度掘り出してみよう）それはそれとして、79年、室内でさえ吐く息が白い冬の朝、中学生だった僕は「早く飯喰え！」等の母親の攻撃や「朝っぱやからるせーんだよ」と息巻く寝ぼすけの不良極悪兄の攻撃を交わしながら、待ちかまえていたNHKFM7：00からの「朝のポップス」をエアチェックしながら聴いたのが初めてであった。Ｔ字路に面した実家では右折する車のウィンカーによる電波の乱れがちょうどSince I Don't Have Youのサックスソロのところで入ってしまうのもいたしかた無かった。
残念なことにMiss YOU Nightsのところで遅刻のタイムリミットが来てしまい、後の運命は極悪兄に握られることになったのだ。そんなわけですり切れるほど聴いたテープにはOh How Happyまでしか入っていない。柳ジョージとレイニーウッドが大好きだった兄が、「なんでぇしゃらくせいなぁ」と勝手に判断してカセットの■ボタンを押したからである。それでも、このアルバムは中学生の時の僕の愛聴テープになった。

アートガーファンクルは声がきれいすぎる。そりゃスコボロウフェアも明日に架ける橋も素晴らしいが、あの手の劇的な曲だとすぐにおなか一杯になっちゃう。そういう点で軽いＡＯＲに仕上がったこのアルバムは何度でも繰り返し聞くことが出来る傑作だ。当時のライナーにはガーファンクルがお忍びで日本に来て自転車旅行をし、野球も見ていった、というようなエピソードが書いてあった。そんな感じの曲たちであり、さらっとオートミールとコーヒーですますような気軽さである。それ!でいて沁みる。スタンダードの2が良い、振られるたびに思い出していた。極悪兄の妨害により後に知った9曲目When Someone~も名曲だ。（Bright Eyesはボーナストラックか？それでいうと10になるけど....）それから5,1,3,8と......

朝から元気いっぱいという人はめったにいない。本当はこのアルバムぐらい物憂いもの。飯攻撃の母もエアチェック妨害の極悪兄も現在は鬼籍に入った。Fate for~にあった今では遠い昔の平凡な田舎町のさむーい朝を払拭する爽やかさがたまらなく懐かしいのである。

ガーファンクルの78年の4枚目。元相棒ポール・サイモンに触発されたのかStuffのメンツをバックに採用し、ゴスペル風の優しくも力強いサウンドを聞かせてくれている。そのようなことも含め非常にやさしく穏やかで、本当に「眠って」しまいそうなアルバムである。現在のソフトロック再評価の中でも秀逸の作品だ。

そして前作の流れからまた1歩踏み出し、エレクトリックサウンドを大胆に取り入れている。Lee Ritenour、Steve Gadd、Rob Mounsey、Stephen Bishopらとのコラボレーションにより、クロスオーバーな魅力を引き出している。いい意味でフュージョンボーカルアルバムに近い作品だ。

発表当時は「これじゃS&Gじゃない！」とか「明日にかける橋のようなきれいなバラードがないじゃないか」などと酷評だったようだが、そんなものを期待しない現代に聴けば非常に上質なＡＯＲアルバムだといえよう。

　内容は申し分ないものの、このＣＤは2008年盤ではありません。
　新たなプレスを期待して買ったのですが、送られてきたのは、97年（たぶん）にリリースされたものと全く同じパーッケージ＆ディスク（CK 35780）でした。
　以前のリリース盤は既に入手困難な状況ですので、初めて購入される方にとってはお買い得な価格のこのアルバムをお薦めしますが、既に購入されている方のリマスターなどをお望みの方は敬遠された方が無難です。
　それにしても、購入者を惑わせる「2008.4.1」表記は改めてもらいたいです。
　もしも、本当に2008年盤がリリースされているのなら、自分のところに送られてきたものは何だったんでしょう？
　購入盤を見て、『Scissors Cut』は即キャンセルしました。
