７０年代後半は、リンダ・ロンシュタットを筆頭に、ウェスト・コースト系の女性シンガーの名作が続出し、夢のような時代であった。そのリンダの大傑作「風にさらわれた恋」に（１）、（３）、（７）の３曲が取り上げられて一躍名をあげたシンガー・ソング・ライターがカーラ。その彼女のデビュー作が本作。リンダも協力している。カーラの場合、２作目の「ささやく夜」が日本でヒットし、そちらの方がデビュー作、あるいはそれだけ持っていれば十分と誤解している人もいるのではないだろうか。本作はデビュー作でありながら、「ささやく夜」に匹敵する名作。何しろ、９９年発表のカーラのベスト盤「オール・マイ・ライフ」に一番多く曲が選ばれたのが本作だから、名曲だらけの作品と言ってよいぐらい。清楚な声で切々と歌い上げるスローな曲には心洗われるし、のりのよいポップな曲、スケールの大きな曲もあってヴァラエティに富んでおり、３０年前の作品という古さは微塵も感じない。ではベスト盤を持っていればよいかと問う人もいるかもしれないが、ベスト盤には収まりきらなかった佳曲もあるし、ジャケットを含めた当時の（今も変らない）カーラの飾らない魅力を本作で感じて欲しいと思う。それだけの価値のある作品である。

寡作で知られる、と書いたって誰のことだかわかりませんが、このカーラ・ボノフも寡作の人に数えられる十分な資格を有していると思います。本作は７７年のデビュー作であり、「ベスト」では「ニュー・ワールド」を最高傑作とし、それはそれで構わないのですが、３０年近く愛聴してきたファンのひとりとして言わせてもらえば、馴染みや思い入れの強い曲が最も多く収録されているのは間違いなくこのファーストだと断言できます。しかし、どのアルバムを見てもわかるように自作に過剰に拘らないとかバックのメンバーがほぼ不動とか、結局彼女の音楽というのは登場してきた時点ですでに完成されたものだったんですよね。

私が初めて karla Bonoffの曲を聴いたのはリンダ・ロンシュタットの“Hasten Down the Wind”には入っていた"Lose Again ”、" Someone to Lay Down Beside Me ”等によってでした。私は（まだ若かった頃の事ですけど）リンダのドラマティックな歌唱が凄く気に入り、たまたまレコード店で見つけたKaarlのこのアルバムを購入しました。
リンダに比べると何か淡々とした印象を受け、正直ちょっとがっかりしたものです。それでもこの人の作る曲そのものは大変気に入っていましたので、続けて" Restless Nights ”も購入しました。東京歌謡際では" Trouble Again ”がグランプリをとりました。その後大して日本で話題になる事もなく忘れられていった様に思います（勿論、熱烈なファンの方は別として）。
たまたま去年久し振りにレコードを取り出し聞いた所、若い頃とは違いこの人の持っている感性とでもいいましょうか、そういったものに惹かれ、調べた所アルバムもｌｉｖｅを入れても僅かに５枚しか出ていないのには驚きました。
勿論全て買いましたよ。今は殆ど毎日の様に何かしらの曲を聞いています。
息の長い数少ないアーティストです。量産でアルバムを出している訳でもないので、どのアルバムをとっても、佳曲で一杯です。
これから、ｋｒｌａを聞いてみようかなと思う方、是非このファーストから聞く事をお勧めします。後悔はしませんよ。
