'７１年作、第２期ジェフ・ベック・グループの１作目です。
第１期のブルース主体のロックサウンドからＲ＆Ｂ色の濃いヘビーロックに変化しています。
同じＲ＆Ｂ色の濃いヘビーロックでも、ブルース臭が強く泥臭いハンブル・パイとは趣の異なるサウンドになっています。
本作は都会的なブラックコンテンポラリ（でもとても重い）に、歪みが少なく、歯切れの良い硬質なジェフ・ベックのギターが相性良く溶け込んでいます。
哀愁漂うギターソロがフューチャーされたインストナンバーから、パワフルなドラムでグイグイ押していくハードなロックナンバーまで幅広く聴かせてくれます。
メンバーの演奏はとてもリラックスしている印象があり、ジャムセッションの中で各自の先進的なセンスと溢れるほどのアイデアから、音が自然に生まれ出たサウンドであるように感じます。
音質的にも第１期より格段にクリアで奥行きのあるサウンドになっていて、エンジニア等、制作スタッフの頑張りも本作が質の高いものに仕上がった大きな要因となっています。
ベック特有の鋭く切り込むコードワークと、縦横無尽に駆け巡るフレーズが本作では格別の切れ味で、ベックのアルバムの中で一番好きです。

第二期ジェフベックグループ第一弾アルバムです。非常に挑戦的なアルバムに仕上がっています、マックスミドルトン、コージーパウエルのバックに支えらてフィーリングでリードギターを弾くベック。ベックのボーカルと組んだ作品としては次作のオレンジが有名ですが、私としてはこの作品の１曲目からの突っ込み加減のベックのリードギターがゾクゾクします。ベック、ボガード、アピスの作品もよいのですがこの作品はリズムと楽曲がブラックというかフュージョンというのか、ぎりぎりの危険性を感じさせてくれます。ボーカルのバッキングもバンド全体で盛り上げてます、後に独自のインスト作品に傾倒するベックにとってはこの時期がボーカルとからむ最高の演奏をしていたからこそやり残すことなく次のスッテプに進んで行ったのではないか・・そう感じる名作です。

１９７１年リリースの第２期ジェフベックグループのファーストアルバム・・・ボブテンチ（Ｖｏ）のボーカルがソウルフルで見事！！メンバーは、ジェフベック（Ｇ）・ボブテンチ（Ｖｏ）・マックスミドルトン（Ｋｅｙ）・クライヴチャーマン（Ｂ）・コージーパウエル（Ｄｒ）と言う強力な布陣・・・リズムセクションの相性もよく、またマックスとのコラボレイトも素晴らしいです！！（マックスとの出会いは本当ジェフにとっては、重要なものです。）コージーパウエルが参加している事もロック史にとって重要な意味を持ってますよね・・・彼の音楽性の広さを知らしめるアルバムでもあります。個人的には６曲目「ニューウェイズトレイントレイン」が最高・・・痺れまくりです、今聴いてもかっこいい！！ラスト!!「ジョディ」も素晴らしい曲です・・・マックスのピアノとジェフのギターがいい味出してます！！ジェフの音楽性の間口を広げた意味のあるアルバムです。
