スーパーセッションで有名なマイケル・ブルームフィールド（ギター）。ジミ・ヘンドリックスとの共演でも有名なバディ・マイルス（ドラムス）。ジャニス・ジョップリンへの曲提供でも有名なニック・グレイブナイツ（主に作曲、ヴォーカル）。こんなメンバーからなるバンドが凄くない訳ないのですが、実際凄い。

マイケルがジャケット内にも記しているように、このアルバムは音楽のるつぼです。ブルース、ソウル、カントリー、ゴスペル等の音楽を吸収し、自分達なりに再構築という、ロックの手法が見事になされています。そして、良い意味で実に聞き易いです。ブルースとかソウルとか食わず嫌いの人にも、悪くないなと思ってもらえる筈です。

ただ、残念ながら、バンドはこれだけで、解散。再結成もありましたが、それもすぐに解散。不運なバンドでした。

いまから30年ほど前、高校生の時に初めてこのレコードを聞いたと時に思った。フィルモアの奇跡やバターフィールドブルースバンドのライナーノートの裏にあったこのレコード、調べたら廃盤。やっと新宿ディスクユニオンで見つけて、なけなしのこずかいで買って家に帰って針を落とした時に思いました。バリバリのBLUSEだと思ったのに。がっかり、でもビックリ。アメリカンなエンターティメントさとグルーブ感。何度も何度も聞いてるうちにはまってしまいました。ＣＤあるなんて思いませんでした。マイク・ブルームフィールド最高。このアルバムの中のＷＩＮＥって曲の歌詞に｢ユー　ノウ　ジャニスジョップリン　シッテル｣と聞こえるのは空耳でしょうか？誰かに確認したかったんだけれども、このレコード持ってる人廻りにいないんでずっと30年間そう思っています。

輸入盤でしか手に入らなかった時に、妙に気になったジャケットの１枚。思い切って買いましたね。マイケル・ブルームフィールドです。バディ・マイルズです。１曲目のキリング・フロアでノックアウト。当時のさまざまなルーツの音楽のごった煮の魅力がいかんなく発揮された名盤です。ライナーノーツも分かりやすい英語で「そうだ、そうだ」と相槌を打ちながら読んだ記憶が懐かしいです。
