シカゴの初期にあった攻撃性やジャズ感覚は少し影を潜めた、マイルド路線の１枚だと思います。
シカゴはデビューから４枚めまでは２枚組以上のアルバムが続いたことでも有名で、
「サタディ・イン・ザ・パーク」収録の「シカゴV」からシングルアルバムも
リリースするようになりました。
新手のファンとしてはこのあたりのアルバムが一番よくわからず手が出しにくい
印象があったのですが、チャート成績としてはアルバムは全米１位を獲り、シングルも
ピーター・セテラがリードをとるM-10が全米１０位、M-2が４位という好成績です
（シングルよりもアルバムで売れるバンドでした）。
ピーターはM-8では珍しくカントリー調にも挑戦しています。
存命中のテリー・キャスの唄うM-4なんかはジミヘンのようなブルージーさが健在、
ブラスが景気のいいナンバーM-5、メンバーのコーラスがあまりにも美しいM-6、
ロバート・ラムもこの頃はまだ主軸の存在、M-1のピアノ弾き語りやM-3、M-9の茶目っ気、
そしてM-7の風刺調の歌なんかも個性が出ていると思います。
かなり時代を感じさせるアレンジも多いですが、真摯に作り込まれている内容なので
聴きどころがいっぱいで、聴くうちにどんどん味が出てくるたぐいのアルバムです。

ライノ盤のボーナスにはM-11がテリーのデモ、M-12はなんとアル・グリーンとのセッションが収録。
これがまた白眉です。シカゴというバンドは折に触れて黒人アーティストや音楽への
敬意を忘れないバンドでしたが、こんなセッションにも良くそれが現れていますね。

３０年前、私はこのレコードを買って、その表紙の紙幣のひげ面のどれが誰だかさっぱりわからなかったのを思い出します。開拓時代のＳＬの封筒に入ったレコードは今でも宝物です。一つ前まで、革命を叫んでいたグループの変わりように、自分を照らし合わせ、今でも大学時代を懐かしく感じます。この後、VIIでジャズに傾倒していったグループの過渡期なのでしょうか。でも私はこのV、VIあたりがシカゴの一番よい時代だったと思っています。３人でボーカルを担当していますがヒット曲はなくてもロバートラムが最高です。

もう、３０年前のレコードしか聴くことができなくて、懐かしくて、コンプリートベストでは聞くことができない、アルバムの復活。ＣＤで出してくれたライノ様に拍手を贈りたい。中学１年時代に「V」を買ってから、殆どのシカゴを買って聞いていたからね。レコードプレーヤが動かなくなって、そろそろ知り合いに頼んで、アナログからデジタルに音源変換する機材を借りて、やってみようかという矢先でしたからね。「V」は既に買っていて、ホッとしたところです。今回はいたたまらなくて、「VII」と「XI」とをまとめ買いですよ。他のI、II、IIIとVIIIはゆっくりと買おう。ついでに書けば、テリー・カスのギターが聞ける時代までがグッド。個人的にですよ。一回聴いてみてチョ
