3枚組のうち1と3(赤と紫)は1996年12月13日　The Knitting Factoryでのライヴ録音、2(黄色)は1996年12月12日・15日サウンド・オン・サウンド・スタジオで録音。

　The Knitting Factoryは100人以上のプレイヤー集団らしく、独自のレーベルを持っている。プロデューサーはグレッグ・ベンディアン。

本作の最も注目すべきはデレク・ベイリーというまったくECM時代のパットとは対極にいるギタリストとの競演である。この頃のパットの頭にある一つの重要なアイテムは「ノイズ」だ。パットはこの頃足繁くインディーズ出身のノイジーなロックバンド、ナンイ・インチ・ネイルズのライヴへ通っているとともに、自身も「ゼロ・トレランス・フォー・サイレンス」というアルバムで『ノイズ』に取り組んでいる。結果はどうあれ暗中模索のパット自身には必要なプロセスだったのだろう。この後、1977年春、ニューヨーク、ライト・トラック・スタジオで録音の『Imaginary Day/Across The Sky 』へと続いていく。

このノイズこそこの頃のパット自身への癒しなのかもしれない。どんなギタリストでもノイズとは切っても切れない仲という事かもしれない。

この『The Sign of 4』って題名はきっとシャーロック・ホームズの『四つの署名』をもじってるんだろうな・・・。

興味を示すとしたらメセニー目的か。本作品はかならずしもメセニーの本業とはいえない。しかしながら、彼の業績としては非常に興味深い。いつものメセニーではないかもしれないが、むしろこれこそがメセニーの奥底にねむるアイデアの一端ともいえる。おもしろいので星５つ。
