As a placeholder between the full-length Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, Broken packs a serious punch. Angrier and less poppy than Machine, this EP is full of noisy hooks, if such a thing is possible (check out that guitar riff on the full-throttle "Wish"), and much closer aesthetically to the industrial subgenre that informs Trent Reznor's music. As song titles like "Help Me I Am in Hell" suggest, Broken is a work of undiluted rage, which is, of course, a big part of its appeal. --Genevieve Williams

Nine Inch Nailsの作品はアルバム毎にスタイルが大きく変わるので、
これだけ毛色が違うとは言えませんが、
他の作品よりも直線的なアグレッションに満たされた異色作だと思います。
レーベルとのいざこざ等で溜まった怒りをぶち撒けるかのように、
轟音を響かすメタルギター、それを誘導するかのような電子音に
怒号のVo.が乗る、NINの中で最もハードな作品です。

中でも事実上1曲目の2.Wishはグラミー章ベスト・メタル・パフォーマンスに輝き、
同年発表でビルボード誌初登場1位となったMINISTRYの“Psalm69”と共に
インダストリアル・メタル全盛期の幕開け的な作品でもあります。
6.Gave Upはハイスピードかつ歪んだVo処理が施されたWishに劣らない名曲だと思います。
またこのCDは98.99.にシークレット・トラックが用意されていて、
その一つ“Suck”は多種多用なミュージシャンの合体ユニット、
PIGFACEの活動でも発表しています。

　孤独で自虐的な表現をし続けるトレント・レズナーが、１ｓｔの次に発表したＥＰ。１ｓｔはエレクトリック・ボディ・ビート主体のサウンドだったが、今作ではギターを前面に出し、よりロック的なアプローチをしている。ＮＩＮ作品の中で最も過激で疾走感溢れる作品だ！　前置きの様なインストから、徐々に暴走が加速する２曲目へとなだれ込み、４曲目でまたインストを挟みながらも、また暴走して一気に６曲目までイってしまう、一連の怒涛の流れは圧巻！　ちなみに、おまけの様な98曲目は80年代に土俗ビートで活躍したアダム・アント（ジ・アンツ）のカバーで、99曲目はレズナーも参加していたＰＩＧＦＡＣＥとの共作。

現在の活躍する多くのバンドに影響を与え、今でもロックの頂点に君臨する
『Nine Inch Nails』(≒Trent Leznor)の名を世に知らしめた、破壊的な作品。
この作品がロックを変えたともいえる。
『Broken』が完成する裏には、彼らと当時契約していたCDレーベルとで揉め事があり、
その怒りが彼らにとっては異色作『Broken』を生んだといっても違いではない。
インスト曲Pinion(1)から93年グラミーのベストメタルソングに輝いた、Wish(2)、
轟音ギターがうなるLast(3)、タイトルも曲自体も壊れているともいえるHappiness In Slavery(4)
ドラムの刻む音が聴き手を掻き立てるGave Up(6)、ライブでも演奏されるSuck(99)
インダストリアルが好きな人、洋楽ロックやメタルを聴く人など聴く価値はあると思うし、
この作品はこのバンドの中では聞きやすい部類に入ると思う。
間違いない事といえば、1990年代の歴史的名盤の一枚であることだろう。
