　ブラス・ロック・バンドの最高峰シカゴの極上名盤『18』にも秀抜な「ナイアガラ・フォールズ」を提供していたボビー・コールドウェルは，魔女みたいな鍵っ鼻のせいで割を食っている裏方ミュージシャン。良いものは良いと評価するはずのアメリカですら，クリストファー・クロスが若禿げの肥満体型だと知った途端，踵を返して時代の波間へ葬り去る大衆のミーハーさには些かの違いもありません。音楽家は音楽が素晴らしいことこそ第一義でなくてはならぬのに困ったものです。

　尤もこの人に関しては日本のファンのほうが遙かに義理堅く，このアルバムも元々は1990年代始めに録音した『ソリッド・グラウンド』（良いアルバムです）の中に入っていた「スタック・オン・ユー」が日本のＴＶコマーシャルで使われたのを契機にして，日本側スタッフの尽力で実現したようです。

　それはそれで素晴らしいことだと思うんですが，どうも彼らスタッフがコールドウェルに対し，必要以上にイージーなムード・ミュージック野郎のステロタイプを押しつけているのが気になって仕方がない。この盤はその勘違いの最たるもの。

　シナトラよろしく弦楽伴奏をバックに付帯しジャジーに歌うあの曲が様になったのは，あくまでもこの人の非凡な作曲センスあればこそです。腐るほどカヴァーされ，アレンジし尽くされたスタンダードを，ジャズ・ヴォーカリストですらない彼が凡庸な管弦楽配置の前で歌って何の存在価値があるでしょう。周到な彼の自作を聴けば彼がジャズ好きなことは一目瞭然ですが，プロなんですからそれはあくまで個人的!嗜好にとどめ，ひけらかすべきではないでしょう。彼より遙かにヘタクソなロバート・パーマーが，クレア・フィッシャーにアレンジを頼んだだけで数段素晴らしい作品を作ってしまった事実を，やはり彼のように才能ある人物は軽視すべきではないと思います。
