硬派のソウル・ファンには「甘すぎ」と言われてしまうスタイリスティックスだが、このデビュー・アルバムは必聴。プリンスもカヴァーした3、ダイアナ＆マーヴィンが取り上げ、メアリーＪが「エブリシング」でサンプリングした6、この二曲を中心に、スイートな彼らの魅力が存分に楽しめる。カヴァー話で言うと、7はベーシスト／プロデューサーのマーカス・ミラーがファンキーにカヴァーしていた。サザン・ソウルが好きな人（かくいう僕もそうだが）には、やはり甘いかなぁ、と正直思わないでもないが、ブラック・コンテンポラリーや、ＡＯＲが好きな人には、たまらないものがあるはず。ゴスペラーズの村上てつや氏のライナーは、結構面白い。

世紀の名曲“You Make Me Feel Brand New”でお馴染みのグループ、The　Stylisticsのデビュー･アルバムです。“You Make Me...”にしびれた人が彼らの曲でもっとしびれたいと思うなら、このアルバム「The Stylistics」まで遡るしかないでしょう。

なぜならこのアルバムこそ、'６８年に“La La Means I Love　You”という名作を書いた作曲家トム･ベルが初めてこのグループをプロデュースしたアルバムであり、のちに“You Make Me...”という名曲を生み出すべき萌芽を、本作のなかにはっきり見出せると思うからです。

とくに６曲目の“You Are　Everything”は、のちの名曲を思わせるスローバラード。３曲目“Betcha By Golly,　Wow”も、それに連なるバラードの佳作です。

上述の“La La Means...”(The Delfonics)も含め、ぜひ一聴を。

スイートなコーラスで魅了するスタイリスティックスのデビュー盤。既にファルセットを駆使したバラードで聞かせるスタイルを確立しています。ヒットした (6)はやはり曲の展開と各テーマの美しさ、コーラスのハマリ、どれを取っても一級品。演奏もファンキーなキレはあまりありませんが、ボーカルを引き立てる過不足ない、歌ものでは王道の路線に徹しています。ファンク好きよりもポップス／バラードがお好きな方にお勧めします。
