　一生に聞く音楽の中で、自分にとって本当に大切だと思えるレコードはそういくつもないはず。そんな数少ない中のひとつに挙げられるのが、私にとってはこのアルバムです。

　キラキラとした豊かな音色とエッジのきいたカッティングを巧みに使い分けて飽きさせないギター、タイトにはじけるドラム、想像力さえ感じさせる独特のベースライン。そして、つぶやくように、時に自信なさげに歌いながらも、知性に裏付けられた勇敢さを感じさせるマイケル・スタイプのヴォーカル。

　青年期の心の揺らぎをスナップショットのように、それこそ曖昧になることを恐れずに曖昧なまま表現すること。それまで誰もやったことがなかった。
ちょうど、ピンぼけな写真が妙なリアリティを感じさせるように。

　曲はバラ!エティーに富んでいて、パンク、フォーク、サイケデリックなどがゴッタ煮のようになっている。ポップも感じさせるし、へヴィーなロックも感じさせる。「名盤」と言い切ってホコリをかぶせてしまうには余りにもったいない、生命力にあふれた不思議なアルバムです。

Perfect Circleを聴くと何故か涙が出てしまう。歌詞は意味不明だが、心の深い部分に訴える何かがあるんだろうな。ＲＥＭの魅力を言葉にするのは非常に困難な作業だが、このアルバムはＲＥＭのそういった不思議な魅力が何の加工もされずに詰まっている。

デビューＥＰ、クロニックタウン（デッドレターオフィスに全曲収録。）でも高い評価を得た彼らのファーストアルバムが、本作です。このアルバムですでに、ＲＥＭとしか呼べないようなサウンドを確立しているのはさすがです。アコースティックな音を基調としながらも、スタジオでいろいろな音が試され、
結果、不思議（としか形容できないような）音を創り出しています。ほとんどの曲が、バース、バース、コーラスという構成ながらも、典型的な曲展開を避けるように進行して行くメロディー。この微妙さこそが、ＲＥＭ最大の魅力だと個人的には思っています。そんな彼らの音楽をすることの喜びが、このアルバムには溢れていると思います。ホントにいつまでもみずみずしいアルバムです！
