名匠ケンプがステレオで録音したシューマンのピアノ独奏曲をまとめたセット。1967年から1973年にかけての録音、音質は良好である。

かなり高齢になってからの録音でもあり、落ち着いた足取りの演奏。
それに、急速な楽章ではメカニカルな意味では苦しそうなところもある。時に細かいリズムが甘くなったり、タッチに脆さを感じさせることもある。

しかし、実に素晴らしいシューマンである。ひょっとすると、シューマンが望んでいた演奏は、このようなものだったのかもしれない。

美しい音色で奏でられる音楽は、どこをとっても生き生きとしており、即興的で自由闊達、時には深い陰影も見せる。また、基本的なリズムが安定しており、響きのバランスのとり方や旋律の歌わせ方も見事、扱いの難しいシューマン作品を親しみ深い音楽として聴かせることに成功している。

そして、その中から濃密なファンタジーが静かに立ちのぼり、空間に広がっていく。まさに詩人の弾くピアノであり、味わい深い演奏である。

収録曲は、「パピヨン」「ダヴィッド同盟舞曲集」「謝肉祭」「交響的練習曲」「子供の情景」「クライスレリアーナ」「幻想曲」「アラベスク」「フモレスケ」「ソナタ第2番ト短調」「夜曲」「3つのロマンス」「森の情景」「ノヴェレッテop.99-9」と、4枚のディスクに盛り沢山、シューマンの有名なピアノ作品がほぼ網羅されている。
