バーンスタインによる第２交響曲は、CBSソニーから旧盤が発売されていた。他の演奏と同様に、新盤はバランス感覚に優れているが、アイヴスの斬新さ、奔放さという点に絞れば、旧盤の方が聴き応えがあるかも知れない。しかし、カップリングの小品も魅力的なものが多く、気軽にアイヴスにふれることができるCDだ。

ちなみに、アイヴスは欧州の同時期の作曲家達とくらべてもかなり斬新な面もあり、第２が作曲された時代と、同時代の他の作品とをそう言う点で聴き比べても面白いかも知れない。

5.0 out of 5 stars おもちゃの詰め込まれたおもちゃ箱, 2002/12/3
好きなおもちゃや、そんなに好きではないおもちゃを無造作に放り込んだおもちゃ箱。アイヴスの音楽はちょうどそんな感じ。おもちゃ箱の前に座り込むと、次々におもちゃを引っ張り出したくなり、気に入ったものを見つけるとそれでしばらく遊んでみたり、急に違うおもちゃで遊んだり。片付けなければ叱られるに決まっているのに、ついつい、なんでも出してしまい最後にはおもちゃの中に自分がいることが楽しくて仕方なくなる。この演奏を聴いてそんなことを思い出した。交響曲第2番の最後の不協和音には、引っ張り出したおもちゃを次々に放り投げて喜んでいる子供の風景が思い浮かぶ。
