1976年の作品です。メロウなフィラデルフィア・ソウル・サイドはホール＆オーツ好きな方はきっと気に入るはず。そしてリトルフィートがベスト・プレイでサポートしているニュー・オリンズ・ファンク・サイドはボーカルがぴたりとはまり、ローウェル亡き後この人がリトルフィートに入れば良かったのになあと本気で思える充実度。見逃しがちな作品ですけど紛れも無い名作です。

ニューアルバムがリリースされたベテランシンガー。この人のサウンドは『めちゃめちゃ渋い』ので、ライトユーザーにはなかなか理解されにくい難点を持っています。またロバートは世界中の『魅力的な音楽を』自分の中に取り込み料理するというかなり手の込んだことをする人なのですよね。なのでこれまたわかりにくいわけです。たとえば＝ニューオーリアンズの音楽、スワンピーな音楽にいちはやく取り組み＝それを『かなりかっこいい形で体現できている』というものすごさ。かなり本格的な黒人サウンド＝まんま黒人なサウンドはびびります。

上記のような事情で日本ではマニアだけのものとなっていました。サウンドは限り無くファンキーであり、リトルフィートに近親性があると思われます＝実際にバックにリトルフィートを起用してる。重心の低い音楽がロバートのお気に入りみたいですね。アラントゥーサンのカバー、レゲエ処理など彼の『趣味世界』が前面に出ているアルバムであります。ダリルホール、トッドラングレン、アランゴーリー、ポールキャラックが好きな人であるならば、はまれると思います。大衆に受けるかどうかなんて考えていなくて、『自分のハートにがつんとくるサウンドを追求』した成果なのではないでしょうか。声の説得力はへたな黒人を越えております。そしてまた特筆すべきは時代をかなり先取りしていたと言うのがよ~~くわかります。
ロバートの声は本当に『黒い』のです。人間感情の深い部分をダイレクトに写し出しているものであります。１０点中１０点

英国ダンディズム男の

一、二をブライアン・フェリーと

争うロバート・パーマーの

土の香りと跳ねるビートが

炸裂するセカンド・アルバム。

トゥーツ&メイタルズのオリジナルであり、

クラッシュの名カバーで有名な

表題曲“PRESSURE DROP"で強靭な粘着力

を持つ喉を披露し、

アレン・トゥーサンをカバーする

プラスティック・ソウル期のボウイと

表裏一体的なソウルフル感覚は、

後のパワー・ステーションしか知らない

80’Ｓ野郎共は、聴いて度肝を抜かすだろう。

そやけど

なんで英国ダンディーおやじ達は

野暮ったい土臭さ漂う、

こんがり黒光りソウルが好きなんやろう？

摩訶不思議なエロティシズムとダンディズムの

相反する関係。
