The first album of the loose trilogy that also includes Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years, Swordfishtrombones marked a radical departure for Waits, whose avant-garde ambitions became plain not so much in his lyrics or subject matter--the songs here deal, as do his older albums, with hard life on the wrong side of the tracks and dreams of escape and transcendence--but in the music, a sound somewhere between German cabaret music from between the wars and contemporary Manhattan rush hour. tom waits が、いわゆるシンガー・ソングライター的な括られ方から決別した、そんなアルバムじゃないでしょうか．．．と。
何せ、曲が面白い！

いきなり一曲目の短い曲で「違う世界」に否応なしに持っていかれます。これ、戦前のアメリカ音楽とかにあったようなフィーリングじゃないでしょうか（．．．．詳しくはわかりませんが）？　これは、これからアルバムを聴くにあたって、「門をくぐる」みたいな意味があると思います。

続いての曲は、エキゾティック・サウンドをも彷彿とさせるような打楽器系の響きに waits の声が抑え気味にのってきて、何ともクール。
で、熱にうなされて夜中に起きた時のような（？）ちょっと悪夢的なインストを挟み、美しいバラードの小品 "johnsburg,illinois" が素晴らしく、更に続く "16 shells from a 30-ought 6" 、これでもうこのアルバムは、ただの作品じゃないのが決定的。ガッシ、ドッカ、ガッシ、ドッカ．．．．．という無骨極まりない打楽器音と waits の声が張り合う様は壮観！
また "frank's wild years" のクールなこと。このオルガンは、ニューオリンズの腕利きプレイヤー ronnie barron ！
で勿論、"in the neiborhood"。　ワタシも、これが目当てで当アルバムに手を出した口ですが、出して良かった．．．と思ってます。

現在の彼の基礎となった作品です。
この作品は万人に勧められるものではありません。それは、ｻｳﾝﾄﾞがあまりにｱﾝﾁ･ｺﾏ-ｼｬﾙである為です。

それでも、このｱﾙﾊﾞﾑを推すのは名曲＜ｲﾝ･ｻﾞ･ﾈｲﾊﾞ-ﾌｯﾄﾞ＞が収録されていることに他なりません。ﾄﾑが好きなら、この曲だけでも是非聞いてみて下さい。

トム・ウェイツにそもそも興味を持ったのは、F・コッポラ唯一のミュージカル「ワン・フロム・ザ・ハート」の音楽、特に、あの独特の調子と声音で切々と歌うバラードが素晴らしかったからだ。
本来の彼のアルバムでの声は、だみ声、しゃがれ声、うなり声、叫び声、そしてささやき、と何でもありで、ひとつの曲のなかでも即興的に声を使い分けているようだ。
独りよがり、気まぐれ、いい加減とそしりを受けそうだが、それこそが他に比するものなき異色の才能なのである。
曲のバラエティぶりも他に類がない。「blue valentine」のような初期のしっとりしたバラードやブルース調から、最近のアグレッシブな異端ぶりまで、実にさまざまな音のごった煮であり、通常の楽器や曲の概念からはみ出してしまった、まるで雑音か異常音のような音の群れやうるさく鳴り響く打楽器音の コラージュ状態とでも言おうか・・・地の底からうなるような声が聞こえたと思えば、次には慰安と慈愛にあふれる聖なるささやきが漏れたりと、彼の多彩さにはカテゴリーがない。
このアルバムは、そういう彼の特徴が最初に感じ取れる中期の傑作だと思う。
