He wasn't Little Stevie, the 16-year-old phenom who set mid- '60s London blazing with his Ray Charles-like vocals, anymore. He was a half-forgotten ex-member of some of rock's most progressive (Traffic) and vilified (Blind Faith) bands, and he was considering leaving show business while recording this--his second album--alone and without a backup band. Arc of a Diver reflects a resigned-to-fate mood. It boasts a synth-heavy, dub-like ambience, with dirge-y tracks like "Spanish Dancer" and the wistful single "While You See a Chance" all but zoning out of your speakers. The fates were kind, though. Recording the single, Winwood inadvertently erased the drum intro. This spacey alteration, together with his catchiest tune since "Paper Sun," catapulted the song onto the charts. 　「ひとり」になって初めて本当の力が出せる類の人種が世の中に居ますが、この人はその筆頭格。でも、ずっとひとりだと煮詰まってしまうから、そう長くは続けられませんが。

　トラフィックのJohn Barleycorn Must Dieなどでも垣間見せてましたが、こうして改めて、歌やシンセは勿論それ以外の楽器の演奏、プロデュース、エンジニアリングなどなどをひとりでこなすのを見せ付けられると、「才能がある」というのはこう言うことなのかとしみじみ感心させられてしまう。また、詞をウィル・ジェニングズにかなり任せているのも成功の一つの要因。内容は、当たり障りはないけれどもポジティヴだし、スティーヴ曰く、「約束の日時を守ってくれるのがありがたい」。なあなあで仕事をする人が多い世界ですから、そういったプレッシャーから開放されて仕事に没頭出来るのも大事な要因だよなあ。

　本人が色々苦労を経て大人になって、角が取れたことも一つあるでしょう、10年前に同じ追い詰められた環境におかれてたら、こんなに良い色の出たアルバムにはならなかっただろうな。前ほど気張って鍵盤も鳴らしてないし。

　ご本人様が誇らしげに言うには、「このアルバムは何から何まで自分自身」。そう言い切れる作品って、音楽でも絵画でも良いけれど、物を作る人が、その生涯に一つ作れるものなんだろうか？

まさに「パーフェクト」な作品。今、聴き直すと、80年リリースというのが信じられない完成度（四半世紀前！）。
確かに、彼が奏でる各楽器の音色は時代を感じさせるが、練り込まれた楽曲の美しさと彼の「歌」には、全く古いというイメージは無い。
突き抜けるヴォーカルが爽快なアップテンポの“1”は、当時、中ヒットを記録した。
イチオシの楽曲は“6”。まさに「Night」な雰囲気を見事なアレンジで一気に聴かせるウィンウッド流ファンキーとも言える名曲。
全編に流れる、アーシーでソリッドなアダルト・コンテンポラリー・ミュージック（決して、ＡＯＲでは無いのがミソ）。
「カッコ良い」音楽に飢餓状態の方には、時代に捕らわれず手にとって欲しい、ノン・カテゴリーな逸品である。

~冒頭「while you see a chance」のイントロに朝靄に煙るNYの摩天楼が彷彿とするのは、私だけでしょうか？
全体を通して、心地よい気怠さと軽妙な活気がないまぜになった空気が漂ってきます。

この人は何よりもシンセの音色やフレーズに「顔」があります。ほかの曲や誰かとのコラボでも、音だけで「あ、Winwoodだ」と気づきます。いわゆる「電子楽器」でここまで確立するっていうのは「すごい」の一言。

まだ彼を知らない人は是非一度聞いてみてください。

むしろ、当時よりも２０数年を経た今こそ良いかもしれません（ようやく「時代」が追いついたか？）
後の「Back in the high life」の方が万人受けするかもしれませんが、やはりWinwoodの魅力が端的かつ明確に示されたこのアルバムがお奨めです。~
