言わずとしれたDef Leppardの代表作(1987)。輸入盤で一足お先に聞きました。ＣＤ１枚目はHysteria remasteredとHysteria B-sides。(retro activeなどの過去のalbumでは既に発表済みなので古くからのファンにはお馴染みですね) 音はリマスターされて、かなり良くなっていますね。約２０年前に聞いた記憶が瑞々しく甦ると共に新たな感動があります。シンセサイザー・ドラムの音がやっぱり格好良い。PyromaniaもRemasterしたら格好良さそう(当時、このドラムの音が衝撃的だった)。"Gods of War"を久々に聞いて、２０年前(当時リビア空爆があった)も今も変わらないんだなぁと、何とも言えない気持ちになった。(この曲で最後の方にサッチャー首相とレーガン大統領の声がエフェクトで使用されているのですが、今ならさしずめブレア首相とブッシュ大統領の声になるんだろうか？)
ＣＤ２枚目はHysteria live B-sides("Rock of Ages"の間奏中のメドレー(Not Fade Away, My Generation, Radar Love, Come Together, Whole Lotta Love)は面白い、さすが英国バンド)、Hysteria Remixes(まぁこんなところかな？音は良い)、Hysteria B-sides continuded(←この一曲はBritish jokeなのかもしれんが、この曲は要らん！ vocalが聞くに耐えない)。最後のjokeが私には通用せず★１つ減。それさえなければ、★4.5と言ったところですね。
日本盤にボーナス・トラックがなさそうだったので、安い輸入盤を購入しましたが、もし歌詞(訳詞)と日本語解説が欲しい場合は日本盤をどうぞ。(輸入盤にはブックレットが付いていますが、歌詞は付いてませんでした)

このアルバムを食べ物にたとえると思いうかべるものは、ずばり「するめ」だと思います。するめは噛めば噛むほど味が出てきます。Hysteriaも聴けば聴くほど味が出てくる。そんなアルバムです。200万枚売っても赤字とメンバーが言っていたように実に4年の歳月をかけて完成された究極のアルバムです。ヒットシングル7曲とゆうとてつもないモンスターアルバムです。今だに私はこのアルバムを聴いています。超おすすめ！

私はデフレパードというバンドに、ある深い思い入れがある。
ハードロック系のバンドで、このアルバム自体、
通算4枚目で3曲のヒット曲を出して世界的に売れた
モンスターアルバムであるが、実は、
このバンドのドラマーが片腕なのだ。
おそらく当時、世界初であっただろうプロの片腕ドラマーなのだ。
何故、片腕なのかと言うと、このアルバムの
レコーディング中に交通事故で左腕を切断してしまい、
ドラマーとして再起不能かと思われたのだが本人の意思と、
シモンズ社というドラムを作ってる会社の協力も
あってエレクトリックドラムを完成させ、
見事に奇跡のカムバックを果たすのである。
左腕の分の仕事を両足に分散させ、
努力と根性＋αで這い上がってきたのだ。
実際、私も当時の伊藤正則の番組で、この事件が取り上げられて
復活した時の、ステージでのドラムパフォーマンスを見て
もう感動しっぱなしだった。
そして、このアルバムから、スティック一本でドラム
を叩いているのだが、アルバム曲のどれを聞いても
とても片腕とは思わせない叩きっぷりで見事と
しか言いようが無いし、ホントにどの曲も完成度の高い名曲ぞろいだ。
特に3曲目の「アニマル」は是非聞いてもらいたい。
私は、このアルバムを聞くたび、このドラマーの事を思うたびに、
嫌な事が忘れられる、そんな一枚である。
そして、最後に片腕のドラマー、
リック・アレンと言う名も心に留めてもらいたい。
余談だが、バンドデビューは1980年なのだが、
当時のリックの年齢は16歳でした。
