【アーティストについて】
1973年にNYで結成され翌74年アルバム『地獄からの使者』でメジャー・デビュー。歌舞伎からヒントを得たと言われる奇抜なメイクと派手なショウなど徹底したエンタテインメント性、一方で親しみやすいポップなハード・ロックという音楽性が相まって大成功を収め、70年代を代表する世界最大級の人気ロック・バンドに登りつめる。その後何度かのメンバー・チェンジやメイクを捨てた素顔での活動を経ながらロック・シーンの第一線で活躍し続け、96年には遂にオリジナル・メンバーでメイクアップをした"KISS"として復活!復活後のツアーは世界各地で話題になり大きな成功を収めた。

このアルバムは、キッスと言えばこのサウンドというくらいキッスらしいアルバムです。前作のヒットで自信がついたのでしょうか、余裕のようなものさえうかがえます。その象徴とも言えるのが、ハードラックウーマンでしょう。キッス初のアコースティックナンバーで、ピータークリスのしわがれ声が実によくマッチしたポールスタンレーの名曲です。また、アルバムトップのいかすぜあの娘もポールの夢みるような甘いヴォーカルとワイルドなヴォーカルが両方楽しめるキッスの代表曲とも言える名曲です。他にも燃える欲望、悪魔のドクターラヴ、熱きレディズルーム、果てしなきロックファイアーなどがいかにもキッスらしい代表曲と言えるでしょう。なおアルバムプロデューサーは、かのエディークレイマーです。

コスチュームは派手で、メイクアップしていても中身はシンプル＆ストレートなロックンロール。前作「Destroyer」は一般的に非常に評価が高いが、ボブ・エズリンのプロデュースは中身まで派手なメイクアップを施してしまった感があり、良いアルバムであると認めつつもKISSである必然性は感じなかった。

そこで本作登場だ。エディ・クレイマーがプロデューサーとして復活し、切れの良いエンターテイメント・ハードロックを展開している。前作のバラード「Beth」は甘すぎた。本作の「Hard Luck Woman」のビタースィートな感じがKISSには似合っている。

まったく個人的なことであるがこの「地獄のロックファイヤー」は自分で買った最初のＬＰレコードである。未だに最初に針を落とした瞬間にギターのアルペジオにあわせてポールスタンレーの囁くように唄うパートから展開して激しいロックになる瞬間の衝撃は言いようのないものであった。アルバムとしてはメンバーのいろんな側面が盛り込まれて、ピーターがうたうロッカバラード「ハードラックウーマン」やジーンの得意とするエロ歌詞の「レディスルーム」など名曲が揃う。
