スティーブ・リリーホワイトからブライアン・イーノへとプロデューサーが変わったU2の出発点のアルバム。ブライアン・イーノはまさに触媒であって、自らが彼等の持つ音楽をどうすべきかを知り尽くしてプロデュースしているのが感じられる。たとえば、『WAR』の『Sunday Blooody Sunday』をイーノがプロデュースしたら、もっともっと素晴らしい出来栄えになっただろうと僕には思える。それほどこのアルバムのU2は光を与えられ、眩いばかりに変貌している。

イーノがやった事は明白。ボーノのボーカルとエッジのギター・リフをより鮮明にし、このバンドの一番素晴らしい部分を見せたのだ。『A Sort od Homecoming』から『The Unforgetable Fire』までの4曲が特に素晴らしい。

ただこの素晴らしい音楽はこれが始まりだという事がもっと素晴らしい。

化け物みたいなグループに成長するきっかけとなったアルバム。プロデューサーはあのロキシー・ミュージックのブライアン・イーノ。当時は意外な人物と思ったけれど素晴らしい成果を生み出すこととなった。こういう路線に行くとは、初め聞いた時は「なんかようわからん」というのが本音でしたが、聞けば聞くほど味が出るというか、今となっては名作「ヨシュア・トゥリー」よりも聞くことが多いですね。「インディアン・サマー・スカイ」やアルバム・チューンの「焔」は絶品。ジャケットもなんか雰囲気が漂っていていいです。このあとのＵ２の音の雰囲気がこれで決まったという感じがしております。まだ聞いておられない方は是非聞いてください。

このアルバムの製作過程を追ったドキュメンタリーを見ると、１つの曲について、メンバーからマネージャー、プロデューサーまで満遍なくアイデアを出し合っているのが分かる。Bonoが曲のアイデアを最初に出す（多分、鼻歌に近いのじゃないか）と、The edgeが曲として進め、ラリーとアダムがアレンジから全体に亘って意見を言う。「ここは、もう１つヴァ―スがいるね」とか。みんなU2の限界を知りつつも、可能性を広げようと真剣だ。イーノが何度もやり直し、ラノアが「結局最初のテイクを使うなら、何度もやる意味がない」とかみついたり、Bonoは身をよじるように絶唱を何度も繰り返すが、ラリーはもうそろそろにしてくれよといった感じ。とにかく若い。
アンビエント・ミュージックで知られるイーノが実は、ゴスペル・ドゥワップ好きという趣味が図らずも見えるような、歌とギターとコーラスを大切にした（もちろんリズムもだが）本作。Warのアメリカ・ツアーでアメリカを知り、その文化を歌わずにいられなくなったが、まだ咀嚼できていない青さもまた若い。それは次作以降に持ち越し。曲は、安心のU2印。歴代11枚のアルバムの１曲目を並べてCD-Rを編集しても、意外と名前の出てこない「A sort of〜」ももちろん素晴らしいが、「Bad」の後半、韻を踏みながら絶唱するBonoのボーカルに悶絶。疾走する前半（A面？）、しっとり後半（B面）という現在まで続く系譜も守られていて、嫌いな人が余りいないであろうアルバム。
