   ディープ・パープルのオリジナル・ギタリスト、リッチー・ブラックモアによって結成され、当初はブラックモアズ・レインボーと名乗っていたレインボーは、メンバーの入れ替わりが激しいスーパー・グループだった。ロニー・ジェイムス・ディオ、コージー・パウエル、ジョー・リン・ターナー、トニー・カーリーといったアーティストたちが入ってきたが、みずからの音楽性が確立し、経歴に箔（はく）がつくとすぐに辞めてしまった。そんな不安定なバンドだったにしては、レインボーは驚くほど強力なチューンを10年の歴史の中で何曲も生み出している。

   『The Very Best of Rainbow』の前半は、誰にも真似のできないディオのヴォーカルをフィーチャー。「Man on the Silver Mountain」、「Stargazer」、「Kill the King」といったディープ・パープル風の激しいチューンが並ぶ。ディスク後半は、バンドのキャリアの中でも比較的新しく、商業的な面を重視した曲が選ばれた。ターナーの名曲「Since You've Been Gone」のほか、「Stone Cold」や「Power」が登場する。何はさておき、本ベストアルバムは圧倒的なソロをたっぷりと聴かせてくれる。ブラックモアとレインボーに七色の縞模様を与えていたのはソロ・プレイだったのだ。（Jon Wiederhorn, Amazon.com）

レインボー自体は知らなかったんですけど、ディープパープルでブラックモアの音楽に興味を持ちました!

ポップな曲もあるけど、悪くはないと思います。

結構KILL THE KINGが有名みたいなんですけど、個人的にはI SURRENDERが好きですね(^-^)

GATES OF THE BABYLONは、アイアンメイデンのPOWERSLAVEに少なからず影響を与えている気がします。

再結成後は除く、リッチーブラックモアズ　レインボーの究極のベスト版である。特徴は下記のとおり。

1　短所から。普通のベスト版は、一般リスナーだけでなくマニア向けに何か付加価値をつけて発売するものである（例えば未発表曲等）が、当作品には全くそういう類の曲が見当たらない。従って、マニアにとっては少々残念ではある。

2　しかし、リマスター版ということで音質は当然向上している。有り難い限りだ。

3　長所としては、レインボーのありとあらゆる作品の中から満遍なく網羅されているので、そういう意味では真のベスト版であると言える。もちろん、こういうベスト版では「この曲が入っていないのが納得いかない」などという意見もあるであろうが、まぁ、選曲についても良い方であると思う。

4　曲順もレインボーの歴史の順番通りになっているし、ビギナーのリスナーにも非常に把握しやすいと思う。彼らの代表曲の1568910等は一度は耳にしたことがある楽曲であるし、いつの時代でも彼のライブでは欠かすことのできない16や、大曲志向かつ様式美ハードロックの原型というかお手本とも言うべき4、美しいソロの7等、お薦めできる曲が満載である。

マニアの方は既にゲットしているであろうが、レインボーをはじめて聴きたいと考えているリスナーにも間違いなくお薦めできる作品であると断言できる。是非、ロックファンは一度聴いてみて欲しい。

ヴァンヘイレン、ブラックサバス、ディープパープル等々、バンドのメインボーカリスト交代に伴い、サウンドが変化するグループは数多くありますが、レインボーほど、サウンドを変えたバンドも珍しいのではないでしょうか。
当アルバムは、ロニージェイムスディオ、グラハムボネット、ショーリーンターナーという稀代の名ボーカリスト３名を擁したレインボーのベストアルバムで、各ボーカル時代の曲が収録されています。ディオ時代の様式美ロックから、ボネットのハードアルバム路線を経て、ターナーのポップスに近いロックまで、幅広い曲が収録されており、アルバムとしての統一感には欠けますが、代表曲が収録されており、レインボー入門には良いのではないでしょうか。
もちろん、ベストアルバムの常として、万人のベストアルバムにはなっていませんが、まずまずの選曲といえると思います。
