   率直に言おう。本作におけるテクノ色は、輝ける巨大な岩盤の頂に積もったささやかな塵（ちり）に過ぎない。その岩盤とは濃密かつ麻薬のごときロックンロールのことで、他にこの分野でそうした偉業を成しとげたバンドはスマッシングパンプキンズしかない。オーディエンスの主流は斬新（ざんしん）さだけでなく親近感も求めているものである。

このアルバムに過小な評価がなされているのが気になって仕方がない。確かにロックにテクノを持ち込んだのは彼らが最初じゃない。だけどＵ２の個性が遺憾なく発揮されており、そこには魔法の音が存在している。特に最初のディスコテックは圧巻だ。エッジのギターとラリーのブレイクビーツが絡み合って、そのメロディーは一度きいたら頭から離れない。そのほかにもたくさんいい曲がある。本当におすすめです。

この時期、U2はスタジアムでのツアーを続けられるバンドでありながら次なるステップはどこへ向かうべきなのか非常に困惑していた。そしてハウィーB、ネーリー　フーパーと組むことで到達した音が「POP」なのである。自ら「大衆性」というタイトルをつけ、時代と踊ることで新しい活路を見いだしたのだ。眉をしかめるファンも多いアルバムだが心配はいらない。「Please」が入っているだけでU2が正気であることがわかる。思い入れのないヤツに語られてしまうような音ではないのである。

1997年ダブリンで録音。『Zooropa』発表後、そのリリースを挟んでのツアーの後、U2は1年間の休暇に入る。メンバーは各々同時代のポップミュージックに浸る時間を持ったわけだ。聴いていたのは結構共通していて、ポーテイスヘッド、マッシヴ・アタック、トリッキー、ケミカル・ブラザーズ、ボム・ザ・ベース、ビョーク、ベックなどだったと聞く。

このアルバムからリミックス・スモール・アルバムも出している。ポップ=リミックスというスタンスも見え隠れする。

POPと宣言しながらも、実は最もPOPと最も遠いところにいて、自らの音の本質を判別できないほどミキサーにかけて、自らが許容できるリミックスで再構成したPOPという風情がある。
本質は重金属のようにヘビーだ。
