   数ある2枚組アルバムのなかでも最高級のものだという評判があまり広まらなかったのだろう。『GoodbyeYellow BrickRoad』は数百万枚程度のセールスにとどまった。あまりにもいろんな曲に手を広げすぎたので、その前に出したもっと落ち着いた感じの『Honky Chateau』にも、その後に出したノリのいいロック調の『Rock of the Westies』にも、完成度では確かに及ばない。しかし、しかしだ。「Bennie and theJets」や「Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting」といった目の覚めるような軽快な曲や、哀愁漂う「TheBallad of DannyBailey」、ダウンビートの旋律で奏でられる「Harmony」を聴けば、ポップスの真髄を集めたすばらしいアルバムであることに文句なく納得できるはずだ。（David Bennun, Amazon.com）

ＬＰの時代から何度となく聞き返してきた作品です。
ＬＰの頃は２枚組みでしたが、ＣＤで一枚編集になったのは続けて聞けるので非常に良くなりました。
エルトン・ジョンの魅力は何といっても曲が素晴らしいことだと思います。エルトンのナイーブな曲調とポップ感覚が昇華され、作品全体を上品に尚且つ優雅にさらに情感あふれたものにしていると思います。

他の作品にも言えることですが、アルバムが一つの作品として成立しているといいますか、最初の曲から最後までの曲の流れが自然で、時間の立つのも忘れて、最後まで聞いてしまいます。

「グッバイ・イエロー・ブリックロード」「土曜の夜は僕の生きがい」をはじめ「キャンドル・イン・ザ・ウインド」「グレイ・シール」「ベニーとジェッツ」などよく知られた曲も一杯。
エルトンの最高傑作にして、７０年代最高の作品だとも思っています。

どの曲をとっても素晴らしい名盤。シングルリリースにする曲はどうやって決めたのだろう？　そりゃ「Benny and the Jets」はほんとにカッコいいし、「Goodby Yellowbrick Road」は何度聴いても美しいけど、例えば「Harmony」だってとっても印象的なバラードだし、「Jamaica Jerk-Off」なんて曲だって、題名や歌詞はちょっとマズイかもしれないけど、ジャマイカの旅行局かどこかがＰＲソングにしたくなるような陽気なリズムの曲ではないか。ともかく聴いてみるべし。

　1973年10月発表作品。エルトン・ジョン全アルバム中、最も人気の高いアルバムで、1974年ビルボード・アルバム年間チャートでも第1位を獲得した歴史的名盤です。もともとエルトンは録音に時間をかけないそうですが、この作品はなんと僅か15日で録音されたと言います。そんな短期間で作られたとはにわかには信じがたい完成度だと思います。
　おまけに普遍的なメロディの曲から実験的要素の濃い作品まで詰め込んだ貪欲なアルバムでもあります。レゲエにも興味を示していたようですが、ボブ･マーレーが世界的に有名になったのは75年の「ライブ」からで、レゲエへのアプローチを考えるとクラプトンの"I Shot The Sheriff"が74年、イーグルスの"Hotel California"が76年ですから、エルトンもかなり「新しい物好き」と言えそうです。
　曲でいちばん有名なのはモンローを歌い後にリメイクされてダイアナ妃に捧げられた"Candle In The Wind"でしょうか。犬猿の仲のキース・リチャーズに「あいつは死んだ女の歌を歌わせると上手い」と揶揄されてますが、そのぐらいしか突っ込みようがない作品とも言えるでしょう。また、タイトル曲も素晴らしい！わずか3分に満たない小品ですが、すごく濃度の濃い曲ですね。大体あんなコード進行聴いたことがない！
　ちなみに仮タイトルは「サイレント・ムービーズ＆トーキング・ピクチュアーズ」だったとか。なるほどイラストまで凝っています。
