　初期アートの代表作。まだ元気だったハンプトン・ホーズの好演に支えられ、軽く躍動感のあるプレイを展開している。
　後藤雅洋氏も述べているように、アート・ペッパーのジャズは白人にしては黒っぽい。あの「ユード・ビー・ソー・ナイス・トゥ・カム・ホーム・トゥ」で有名になってしまったアート本人は心外だろうが、日本人は特に旋律の美しさを以てジャズの魅力と捉える向きが多いように思う。しかし、アートのジャズはむしろチャーリー・パーカーに繋がる本格派、つまりアドリヴ一発勝負のジャズなのだ。一曲一曲が短いだけに、このアルバムではその面がはっきり浮き彫りにされている。わたくしが本作を強く推したいのもそれが理由だ。
　同じ白人ジャズ、アドリヴ重視の本格派でも、リー・コニッツとはそのプレイ・スタイルは大きく異なる。コニッツのジャズがトリスターノ理論に支えられた、頭脳プレイの側面が大きいのに対し（しかしあの切れ味は凄みがある）、アートはもっと本能的に吹いている。その点でもパーカーに通じるところがある。天才型のアーティストだったのだ。
　この切れ味に渋い内省味を加えた大人のジャズが「モダン・アート」だが、あの最高傑作には敵わないものの、これもまたアートの魅力ある側面であることは間違いない。名盤だ。

アート・ペッパーは麻薬のために音楽活動が一時中断したが、その後見事にカムバックした。このレコードは彼の最初期の演奏で1952年から1954年のセッションが納められており、彼の流麗なフレージングの萌芽が既にあちこちに見られる。彼の代表作はなんといっても「ミーツ・ザ・リズム・セクション」だがこのレコードもナイスなジャケットデザインと共に、なかなか良いアルバムです。という割りに評価が低いのは、彼のアルトサックスの音色があまり好みじゃないからなので、演奏の内容ではありません。
