スティービー・ワンダーの音楽というと、とかく７０年代のInnerVisionsなどが取り上げられますし、かくいう私もその完成度の高さは認めざるを得ないところがあり、また大好きでもあるのですが、このアルバム Conversation Peace は彼がそうした黒人音楽（ファンク or ソウル）とは違う高みを目指した一成果といえるのではないでしょうか。その結果、このアルバムは、ファンクやソウルミュージックを超えた到達点に達していると思います。実際、ファンク or ソウルという点で言うと、一作前のサントラ Jungle Feverで非常に完成度の高いアルバムを作っており、この方向を続けることもできたはずです。７０年代のアルバムと同じ雰囲気を求めるだけなら、かって損をするかもしれませんが、先入観なしで、聞いてみれば、聞けば聞くほど味が出てきて、彼の表現方法の深みを堪能できるすばらしいアルバムだと思います。

key of life の頃と比べると、ずい分肩の力が抜けてるような気がする作品です。トラックNo10のFor your loveのようなStevie Wonderらしい、Steivieでなければ歌えないような曲もありますが。他を圧倒して、思わずひれ伏してしまいそうな作品群をどんどん発表していた頃と比べると、気楽に作品創りを楽しんでいるStevieかなあと思うのです。

90年代に入り2枚目のアルバム"Conversation Peace"。意外と評価の低いアルバムだけれど、僕は大好きなアルバムの一つでもある。サウンドトラックとして発売された前作、"Jungle Fever"で、"In Square Circle"や"Characters"にあった、何処か聴いていてもどかしさを感じる部分は充分に拭えたように思う。そしてこの"Conversation Peace"はオリジナルアルバムとして、その充実を完全なものにしたものであるような気がする。90年代という時代になって、他の新しいアーティストがぞくぞくと登場する中、確かに時代への遅れは感じさせるものの、彼等に堂々と誇れる大きさを持ったアルバムであると僕は思う。

なによりもオープニングソング"Rain Your Love Down"のイントロで、僕はもう涙が出そうなほど衝撃を受けた。このグルーヴ感をずっと待ち望んでいたような気がする。"Superstition"や"I Wish"といった楽曲を思い起こさせるような直接心を沸き立たせるファンキーなこのイントロを聴いた時、わだかまりというようなものが全て消えた。

そして、彼の歌声はどんどん進化していっている。この部分に関しては彼の黄金の時代、70年代よりも充実している。"For Your Love"のような楽曲を他にどのシンガーが歌えるのだろうか？これほどまでに神々しい響きを持ったLove Songは、彼だからこそ創り得たものだと思う。

残念な事は多少中だるみをする部分があったり、全体の完成度が以前のアルバムに比べると少し低い事だと思う。だけれど、決してこのアルバムは彼のこれまでの名盤と比べても劣るとは思っていない。傑作とは言わないけれど、豊かな満足感をちゃんと味合わせてくれる作品であると思う。
