代表曲がそろっているベスト盤がたくさん発売されているので、まずはそちらを聴くべきだと思いますが、８０年代の活動がどんなものだったのかを知るには、このアルバムを避けて通ることはできないでしょう。
"Part-time lover"から始まり、アパルトヘイトを歌った曲で終わる、といういかにもこの時代を象徴するような内容になっています。

名曲"Overjoyed"もこのアルバムからの１曲です。

前作"Woman In Red"収録の"I Just to Say I Love You"が85年アカデミー賞で最優秀主題歌賞を受賞し、その勢いと自信を持って発売された"In Square Circle"という作品。80年代というデジタル機器の発達によって打ち込みによる制作が浸透し、前作、前々作のStevieの作品にも随所にそれが多用されてきた。そして今作はその打ち込みによるサウンドが中心の核となり制作された作品だ。これまでにStevieの音楽を聴いてきたものとして、最初の"Part Time Lover"のイントロで大きな違和感を感じてしまうのは否めないのではあるけれど、デジタル機器を使用する事による個々の楽曲の高い完成度と、そして彼らしいポップなメロディセンスでまとめられた綺麗な作品だ。ただ、Stevie Wonderの作品として今ひとつ物足りない感じがしてしまうのは、これまでのような挑戦的なサウンドプロダクトや人の考えつかないような発想というものがなく、卒なくまとめられている事が理由だと思う。

やはりこのアルバムは"Overjoyed"という素晴らしい楽曲があると言う事が1番魅力的な部分だと思う。切ないメロディとその詞はStevie Wonderの数あるバラードの中でも最高の出来だ。その他にも隠れた名曲"Stranger on the Shore of Love"もバラードソングとして美しい1曲。またアパルトヘイト問題をテーマにした社会的なメッセージソング"It's Wrong (Apartheid) "のような楽曲も収録されている。

Stevie Wonderが長い期間を超えヒットを量産し未だにトップアーティストとして君臨するのは、その時代に対する需要を確かに感じ取ってその中から作品を制作する事が出来る事が大きい要素だと思う。確かに80年代のStevieの音楽は70年代に比べどこかスケールダウンしたかのように感じてしまう所があるけれど、決してそれは彼の問題ではなく音楽業界や市場の変化が原因だと思う。80年代という音楽の大量生産と大量消費が現れた時代に"Overjoyed"という世に残る名曲を発表するStevieはやはり一流のクリエイターであるように僕は思う。

八〇年代のS・ワンダーは評価が低いが、理由はブラック・ミュージック全体の問題である。それは「打ち込み」へサウンドプロダクツが変貌したからに他ならない。その点で70年代の象徴であったS・ワンダーは評価によって時代淘汰にあった。しかし、彼の持つ音楽性はより高次の「ポップ」を生み出している。
　このアルバムはジャケットどおり、S・ワンダーの音楽からいうとサウンドが多少「コズミック」に出来上がっている。
「パート・タイム・ラバー」「愛のノスタルジア」「オーバージョイド」は彼の音楽の中でも傑作中の傑作だろう。変に「アーティスト」していないし、なんといっても曲自体で「驚き」を与えてくれる素晴らしい楽曲群だ。
特に「ネヴァー・イン・ユア・サン」は世界広しといえど、ここでしか絶対に聞けないと思う。天才だ。最初はパーカッションとベースでスタート。完全にアップテンポの曲かと思いきや、コズミックな感覚のあるスマートなバラード。そして熱いソウル。素晴らしいの一言。
