クロームは、レジデンツ、タキシードムーンらと共にサンフランシスコのアングラシーンで活動していたグループだ。一般にサンフランシスコと言うとレジデンツが思い浮かぶ。しかし、クロームの最高傑作名高い２アルバムを一枚に収めたこのCDには、レジデンツをも上回る異様さとヤバさを孕んだ音が記録されている。初め聴いた時は何が何やらさっぱり分からなかった。どこまでがHalf Machine~なのかどこからがAlien~なのかも分からず、全ての楽器にかかるサイケデリックなエフェクト、異様なSE、突然ぶち切れて突然始まる意味不明な展開、そしてヤバイくらいの疾走感…それらの生み出す圧倒的な高揚感に唖然としているうちに、いつの間にか音盤は終了していた。聴き終わるとすぐにまた聴きたくなり、毎日繰り返し聴いた。今もほぼ毎日聴いている。そして聴く度に高揚感がもたらされる。非常に麻薬的な作品である。メンバーの考案する「ドラッグなしでハイになれる音楽」は完璧に確立されているといってよい。また、一聴は訳の分からぬSEや編集に目を眩ませられて、それこそテキトーな音楽に聴こえるが、聴き込んでいくうちに、それが計算し尽くされた音楽であることに気づく。その点でクロームはドイツのファウストの精神と類似するところがある。ファウストと違ってロック外の音楽の影響はほとんど見られないが、ホークウィンド、ノイ、カンなど往年の実験バンドの影響は随所に見受けられ、それらが「クロームの音」として完全に取り込まれている。クロームは、ジャーマンロックに代表されるロックの実験的方法論を、最高の形で表現したバンドだと思う。

このバンドはたぶん、試聴してもよくわからないでしょう。
そこから流れてくる音は、正統派パンクに近いと思うから。
アルバムを全て聴いてこそ意味がある。なぜならアルバムを全て聴かれることを前提に作られたアルバムだから。
まともなパンクが流れたと思うと、次の瞬間ノイズとなり、ミニマルな展開へと変わる。

『アヴァンギャルドなパンク』じゃなくて、『アヴァンギャルドとパンク』なんです。

音楽的豊穣を独自の方法で追求した、真の意味でのパンク・ハードコアバンド
を多く有するタッチ＆ゴーレーベル。その初期において外すことのできない作品です。
この作品で展開されるのは異様なテンションを内包する反復。
執拗に繰り返される８ビートの曲群が聴き手を圧倒し、深みへと誘い込みます。
現在でいうサイケトランスに通じる快感。極限まで変化を排除し肉を削いだ
グルーヴに、スペーシーなSEの数々がはさまれます。
勿論アヴァンギャルドなだけではなく、どこまでもポップであるのが名盤と称される所以です。
凄まじいファズがかけられたギターとザクザクしたドラムは猛烈に格好良く、
そしてその粘ついた質感は耳に心地よく全く飽きを感じさせません。
はまれば底なしにのめりこめる作品です。畸形的な美しさと言えばいいでしょうか、
僕はあぶらだこの青盤を聴いた時と同じような感覚を見出しました。
