「Big Black」が解散した後、プロデューサーとしてのキャリアをスタートしていたSteve Albiniが、その傍ら結成したバンドで、結成は１９８８年のことでした。メンバーはノイズ・パンク・バンド「Scratch Acid」のベーシストDavid William Simsと、ドラマーのRey Washamの３人組。バンド名は日本のコミックから取られ、この名前が多方面より物議を醸し、各種団体よりバンド名改名の要請が来るなど、センセーションを巻き起こしました。Steveにとっては、初めての生ドラムによるバンドになるわけですが、ここでも彼の金属的な、正にメタリック・ギターは冴え渡り、「Big Black」時代のような単調なリズムではなくてフックの効いたドラムとのコンビネーションにより、更なる進化を遂げ、変化と起伏に富んだ、しかしトリオ編成により非常にソリッドでタイトなサウンドとなっています。しかし相も変わらず強烈なメッセージ性は鋭く、しかしながら「性」や「人種差別」をあからさまに表現していくスタンスは過激さを増していき、ジャンク／インディ・ロックファンのは受け入れられたものの、はっきりいって敵を多く作ってしまった感があります。そして向かい風の中、まるで嵐のように、バンドはたった２年間の活動にピリオドを打つ事となり、今作が唯一のアルバムとなってしまいました。優れた音楽性と凄まじいまでの憎悪、皮肉を織り込んだ、真にオルタナティヴと呼べるスタンスだった!たけに、残念でしかたありません。このバンド解散以降のSteveのプロデューサーとしての手腕は語らずもがな。Davidは「Scratch Acid」のメンバーと「Jezus Lizard」を結成、Reyは多少のブランクを経て「Ministry」へ加入する事となります。

プロデュース業で名を馳せるスティーブアルビニがギターを担当するスリーピースバンド。事の経緯は有名で、他のレビュアーの方々が詳細に述べられているので割愛しますが、短いスタンスの中で唯一現在も聞けるアルバムとして、非常に貴重であろう。手に入れれる内に買っておいたほうがよいかもしれない。

アルビニのギターはまるでスネアを叩いているような、芯が薄く拡散していくような鋼鉄を思わせる音であり、ベースはハンマーで叩くような重くガリガリとした音が印象的。ジョンケイルのベースを彷彿とさせる。声が異様に小さく録音されていて、正直何を叫んでいるのかさっぱりわからないのですが、それはともかく素直に「かっこいい」と思いますよ。所謂アンダーグラウンドな分けの分からないバンドという趣向ではなく、アバンギャルドながらも後のストーナーやグランジと言った方向性のある楽曲達は耳に馴染みやすい。

1988年10月リリース。スティーヴ・アルビニが2番目に作ったバンド。名前はお気に入りの日本のコミックから取ったが、米の女性保護団体等から猛烈なブーイングを浴び、EP『Budd』１枚とこのアルバム『Two Nuns And a Pack Mule』１枚だけを残し解散。このアルバムの中の『Kim Gordon's Panties』は、SONIC YOUTHのキム・ゴードンを揶揄ったものだが、それをキムの旦那であるSONIC YOUTHのサーストン・ムーアの前で演奏してボコボコにされたりと話題に事欠かないアルバムである。

何しろスティーヴ・アルビニはこの後、バンド活動は辞めてしまいプロデューサに徹することとなるのでプレイヤーとしての最後のアルバムとしても価値は高いのだろう。(まあこの後SHELLACがあるがあれは別物だものな)

ノイズと神経質なスティーヴ・アルビニのボーカルに浸りたい人のためのアルバムです。
