元ジャパン、ベーシスト：ミック・カーンと、元バウハウス、ボーカリスト：ピーター・マーフィーのユニット。１９８４年、結成当時はかなり話題になりました。曲作りにおいては、ほぼミックの独壇場で彼のやりたい放題。楽器の演奏が出来なく、作曲は不得意のピーターは作詞のみだと思われます。あと、もうひとり、ポールヴィンセント・ラウフォードがドラム、リズムを担当しています。聞いた感じだと、未完成な感は否めませんが、テクニックや曲の構造ではなく、何ともいえない緊張感があり、聞くごとに引き込まれていきます。

結成当時、二人の精神状態はある意味、とても似た状態にありました。過去、自分達が居たグループのイメージから逃れたい、過去のファンやメディアのイメージと、逆の事をやりたい、そんな”ジレンマ”や”怒り”が、二人を結びつけました。

しかし、そのような状態は長くは続きませんでした。アルバム１枚、シングル１枚、数回のイギリスでのテレビ出演等で、いつの間にか幕を閉じ、自然消滅してしまいます。

その後、二人は個別のインタビューで、「僕たち本当は全く別の性格で、僕たちを結びつけていたのは”怒り”だけだった。」ミックいわく「ピーターは歌いたがるだけで、曲を作りたがらなかった。」と言い。ピーターいわく「ミックは本当は”ジャパン”を続けたがっていた。」と互いに、言い放っていました。本当はもっと続いてくれればな~。

とても残念です。未完成だけど、聞いて損はしません。

バウハウスのピーター・マーフィーと
ジャパンのミック・カーン。大英帝国の
２大バンパイアが出会ってしまいました。
ポップでオルタナティブ。気持ち悪い
のに美しい。妙ちくりんで格好いい。
ピーターの声もミックのベースも余計な
調味料なしで堪能できます。感涙です。

当時お互いにバンドが解散し、日本の某音楽雑誌の対談で意気投合しユニット結成となりました。ミックの創りだす、中近東とも無国籍とも聴けるサウンドにピーターの伸びやかで艶のある歌声が聴かれます。それは時には童謡を聞いている感じだったり、ギリシャ神話を語られているようだったりもします。サウンドは全体的にエスニックな感じとしてきかれますが、やはりこのふたり独自の世界を築き上げています。もう少しアルバム創ってほしかったですね、このふたりで....。隠れた名盤ですね、やはり....。
