8作目にあたるこの作品は、バンドとして初めてギタリストを迎えて、カンタベリー派ジャズロックからフュージョン路線へと一大転換を図ったメルクマール的な重要な意味合いをもっています。1975年の作品。
何といってもアラン・ホールズワースの息の長いソロと目にも止まらない超絶技巧ぶりに接して度肝を抜かれます。ホールズワースはグループ加入以前に、ジョン・ハインズマン率いるTempestでの壮絶な超絶技巧で一躍スターダムへとのしあがりましたが、ここでのプレイはさらに磨きがかかり、Soft Machineのようなジャズロックのフォーマットにも柔軟に対応できる実力をもっていることを見事に証明しています。「Hazard　Profile」でのひつようにリフレインされるテーマに対して勇敢に斬りこんでくる流麗なソロは、当時もいまもジャズロックの金字塔的な名演です。また、アルバムタイトル曲の「Bundles'」での人間の限界を遥かに超越したソロと、次曲の「Land Of The Bag Snake」に移行するまでのあまりに鮮やかで見事な展開は、いま改めて聴き直してみてもため息が出てくるばかり。ホールズワースはこの曲とアコースティックギターによるハーモニックスだけで構成された「Gone Sailing」の2曲を提供していますが、グループ全体で占める彼の重要度は、それ以上に及ぶどころか完全に牛耳っています。ホールズワースはこのアルバム１枚のみに参加しただけでグループを脱退。トニー・ウイリアムス率いるライフタイムに加入しますが、その後の活躍ぶりを考えると70年代後半のジャズロックシーンは、間違いなくホールズワースを中心に回っていたことを改めて感じさせます。

ＮＨＫの「世界紀行」テーマ曲を演奏するアディエマスで今や、日本だけでメジャーとなったカール・ジェンキンス（作編曲、Kb、oboe等）がいたバンドとして紹介したほうがいいかも知れない。このブリティッシュ・プログレッシブ・ロックの中では極めてユニークな位置を占める「カンタベリー・ミュージック・シーン」の中心的役割を果たした名バンドのメジャー８作目は、鬼才ロバート・ワイアット（ds、vo）やヒュー・ホッパー（b）らが戦線を離脱し、カール・ジェンキンス色が一層強まった作品だからだ。ＬＰ盤ではＡ面ぶっ通しだった冒頭の組曲は、ジェンキンスがかつて在籍したブリティッシュ・ジャズ・ロック・フュージョンの走り的な名バンドである「イアン・カー＆ニュークリアス」の２作目からの焼き直しだが、世界一の超早弾きギター名手と言われた同じくイアン・カー（tp）のバンドにいたことがあるアラン・ホールズワースの緊張感溢れるプレイを加えることで、見事な演奏として蘇った。ジョン・ウイリアムス（g）のいたスカイ、ジョン・マクラフリンのマハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラ、ジェフ・ベックのボーカルなし作品などのギター・インストゥルメンタル音楽が好きな人には絶対外せない名盤。これは本来、フュージョン・ファンが聞くべき作品だったが、街のレコード屋さんでは長いことロックのコーナーにしか置いていなかった。音楽のジャンル分けの無意味さを痛感する。

１９７５年発表のＪＡＺＺＲＯＣＫの名盤・・・ギターフューチャー型ソフトマシーンの第１弾です。ソフトマシーンファンは逆に離れたアルバムでしょう・・・それにしても、アランホールズワースが素晴らしい フュージョン化した事は否めませんが、ＪＡＺＺＲＯＣＫのテンションを十分堪能出来る仕上がりです。次作「ＳＯＦＴＳ」も必ず聴いて頂きたいアルバム
