Evansは晩年に円熟味に溢れた作品を沢山残してるが、この一枚が一番秀作だと思う。

まず切ないほど美しい、「I will Say Goodbye」と「Seascape」。
音から人情味があふれでて、温かい気持ちになれる「A House Is Not a Home」など
名曲が沢山はいってます。
でも僕が一番好きなのは「THE Opener」なんだよなー。ラファロやモチアンの時のコンビと
比べれば、確かにひけをとるかもしれないが、Gomezの、なめらかで伸びるようなベースプレイとZigmundの覇気のあるドラミングとの組み合わせもなかなか良いです。
後期は悲しい曲調が多いEvansだが、やっぱり彼が一番やりたかった音楽は、openerみたいな
三者三様の躍動感あふれる曲なんだと思う。

あとジャケットの画がいいよね。始まりとも終わりとも取れる画が・・・・・・

ビル・エヴァンスは麻薬の常習により健康を蝕み、50年という短い生涯を終えるわけですが、この『I Will Say Goodbye』は、彼の最後の輝きを放ったアルバムです。
この３ヶ月後に録音した『You Must Believe In Spring』と共に晩年の傑作という意味では、多くの方の賛同を得られると思います。

エヴァンスは耽美的だと評されています。３曲目の｢SEASCAPE｣のように、ガラス細工のように繊細で、細部にまで美しさを散りばめたような演奏は他のジャズメンはもちろんのこと、エヴァンスによる過去の録音の中にもなかなか見つけ難いです。この抒情的な演奏は何回聴いても飽きるということはありません。それほど深い精神性をたたえています。もしまだ聴かれていないようでしたら是非聴いて欲しい演奏です。

このアルバムの収録前後、元の妻エレインは地下鉄へ飛び込んで自殺し、兄も銃で頭を打ち抜いて自殺するという悲劇が相次いでエヴァンスを襲います。そのような精神状態の中で収録したこれらの演奏の中に、心の安住を求めるのは当然でしょう。

「I Will Say Goodbye」、「Quiet Light」、「A house Is Not A Home」など美しい曲が数多く収録されているのは、ピアノを演奏することで繊細すぎる彼の精神のバランスを図ったとのだと推測します。それによってこれだけの美しい作品を今聴くことができるわけですが。
1960年代前半のラファロ、モチアンとのトリオの美しさとはまた違ったエヴァンスの素晴らしさを感じることができるアルバムだと言えましょう。

Waltz for Debby 少し青い。Moon Beams 悪くはないけど眠くなる。You Must Believe In Spring どこか暗すぎる。と思う諸兄姉にお勧めなのが本作です。ビルが実兄ハリーの死の二週間後にレコーディングしたのでこのタイトルになったとのことです。リリカルで実に美しいエヴァンスのメロディとピアノが満載されています。聴いていると本当に身が引き締まる程に美しい。そしてどこにも締まった甘さがある。今までエヴァンスの最高作は前述のYou Must Believe In Spring だと思っていましたが、ここに改めます。私が持っているエヴァンスＣＤ５０数枚の中でこれが一番好きです。エヴァンスの本質はとてもソウルフルなプレーヤーだったことが分かります。隅々まで気の行き届いた叙情的なピアノが心に染み渡ります。最近はこればかり聴いていますが全然飽きません。Bill Evansは妥協のないデカダンスなジャズマンだったことに気付きました。ビルにサヨナラを言う前に是非これを聴いて下さい。
