コルトレーンに東洋思想をはじめとする多大な影響を与えたと言われるユセフ･ラティーフ、61年の作品。その東洋思想のエッセンスは彼がサックスからオーボエ、あるいはフルートに持ち替えた時に一気に爆発する。特筆すべきはM-5。｢キューブリックの同映画テーマ曲の~」云々抜きにして、これこそ全ての音楽ファンに聴いていただきたい作品。北アフリカ~中近東の原風景は、抑揚の効いた流れるようなオーボエによって見事に描き上げられ、バリー･ハリスの温かみに満ちたピアノの一音一音と相まって見事なハーモニーを生み出している。この完成度は同曲のビル･エバンス･ヴァージョンを凌駕し、また同時にジャズの範疇をすでに超え、クラブシーンの重鎮CALMにも精通する何かを感じさせる。
とにかくNO MUSIC NO LIFEを自覚する方は聴いておくべきであろう。また数あるユセフ･ラティーフの作品の中でも最も古さを感じさせない1枚としてもお薦め。

　ユセフ・ラティーフの音楽は何枚か聴いたことがある。いずれも個性的で、面白いと思ったが、心の片隅で、この人は「イカモノ」じゃないか、という疑いをいつも持っていた。
　しかし、もっとも「イカモノ」っぽい（？）本作を聴いて、逆に、正統な人だと、自らの感性に自信を持つことが出来た。
　本作の音楽は、ただの珍味好きのアメリカ人やヨーロッパ人の、表面だけでの東洋賛歌とはわけが違う、とおもう。たしかに、曲によってはややエキゾ＝偽東洋的に聞こえる部分もあるが、ここで奏でられている音楽は、「ファー・イースト」というよりも「ニア〜ミドル・イースト」に近いものであるため、われわれ日本人にとってもエキゾに聴こえてしまうのは仕方が無いのかもしれない。
　いずれにしろ、1961年という段階で、こういった音楽を創造できたユセフ・ラティーフは只者ではない、やはり。
ビル・エヴァンスやサンタナも演っている「スパルタカス愛のテーマ」が、前評判どおり一番美しい。
　バリー・ハリスのピアノも全編で素敵だ。
　テナー・サックスで奏でられる「ドント・ブレイム・ミー」は、東洋色が払拭され、大人の夜のジャズ、といった趣だ。
　とにかく正統なJAZZの傑作と思うので、なんとなく怪しげな作品かな？と購入をためらわれている方には、自信を持ってお勧めしたい。

亡羊としてる、、という言い方が褒め言葉に使って良いものか知りませんが、なんとも形容詞し難い発想というかセンスというか。しかし、ちょっと異端な風評のあるアーティスト程、面白発見率も高いようです。
Y.ラティーフが'61年に吹き込んだ本作など、その最たるものではないかと思います。
もやっ、としていながら、どこか素朴さに惹かれるflが面白い[1]。オーボエでモードジャズ(というか、ブルース)をやっている[2]。
そして目玉曲かも知れないビューティフルな[3]。わずか４分そこそこの曲ですが、始めから終わりまでY.ラティーフの奏でるオーボエがまことに胸に染み渡ります。
タイトルから想起される程の東洋っぽさ？は強く感じませんが、それでも60'sの早期において東洋的な響きの美しさを正面から捉えようとした辺りは、東洋人として嬉しく思います(^^;
全編、ゆったりとしたモードジャズを楽しめるのではないでしょうか。
