   不敵な面構えのジャケットがいい。ジョニー・グリフィンは小柄だが、ビッグトーンの持ち主で、パワフルな演奏に特徴がある。エディ・ロックジョウ・デイヴィスとのテナーバトルも評判になった。それでついたニックネームが「リトル・ジャイアント」だ。
   59年録音の本作は、グリフィンの代表作としてまっ先に名前が挙がるアルバムだ。音が飛び出した瞬間、ずしりとした手応え。それもそのはず、トランペットのブルー・ミッチェル、トロンボーンのジュリアン・プリースターを加えた、3管編成によるエキサイティングなファンキージャズなのだ。
   曲は、半分がノーマン・シモンズ作曲のファンキー曲である。シモンズはピアニストとしても知られるが、この録音では音楽ディレクターを務めた。すばらしいオリジナルを提供したシモンズの貢献度は非常に高い。特に<2>は印象的な曲で、ストップタイムを使った演奏にすっかり魅了される。
   さらにもう1人、本作ではウイントン・ケリーのピアノにも要注目だ。小気味のいいケリーのピアノが、演奏をキリリと引き締めている。（市川正二）

ヴァン・ゲルダーやロイ・デュナン、ジム・アンダーソンくらいは知ってても、ジャック・ヒギンズという録音エンジニアが話題になることはない。リバーサイドレーベルの主要なレコーディングを担当した人だ。間接音が多いから録音が悪いと勘違いする人も多いのだろう。本作など得意のスケールの大きい、まるでビッグバンドを思わせるようなサウンドで録れている。しかし、耳の良い人に言わせると、ヒギンズの本拠地、リーヴス・サウンド・スタジオはピアノの調律があまり良くないそうだ。ヴァン・ゲルダー・スタジオはその辺ちゃんとしてるらしい。

この次期 リバーサイドはキープニュース制作の三管ものを立て続けに出してますが ベスト3の一枚です。このアルバムの他にジョージ・ラッセルの「エズセティック」、ジャズ・メッセンジャーズ「キャラバン」ですが、このアルバムが一番早く録音された しかもレギュラーコンボでなく一期一会のセッションだったてとこに価値が有ろうかと思います! いやあ 凄いよね 如何にノーマン・シモンズが優れたアレンジ書いても プレイヤーが理解して演奏できなきゃ話に成らない訳だから… 特にベースのサム・ジョーンズと ドラムのアルバート・ヒースの貢献は大きいよね 楽だよ こんなにガチッと安定したグルーブに乗っかってプレイできるのは。これだけカッチリしたアレンジの中で ウィントンは要所要所で 絶妙なタイミングで「ケリー節」を弾く余裕が有る訳だからね スゲーって思う マジで! やっぱり サム・ジョーンズの参加音源にハズレ無しだわ SWING♪ してるもんね フロント三人も 相当 気持ち良くプレイできたんだろうね 楽しんでる雰囲気が出てるよね。少なくとも ワタシ的には 三管ハードバップでベスト10に入る大名盤 オススメ致します!(とほほの助)

　グリフィンのテナーにブルー・ミッチェルのトランペット、ジュリアン・プリースターのトロンボーンと言う三管フロントにピアノがウィントン・ケリーと言う重量編成で、ヘビーにパワフルに飛ばすグリフィンの代表作だ。ダークなトーンが格好良いねぇ。お奨め。

　この音楽に加えて、鼻の穴を拡げまくってテナーをブローするヒゲ・グラサンのアルバムジャケットからすると、グリフィンは相当コワモテの様に思えるが、実際は優しい目をした小柄なオッサンだ。
