Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Miles Davis and Horns is a remastered CD that collects two somewhat disparate sessions early in the trumpeter's career. Five 1951 tracks find him in the company of trombonist Bennie Green and a tyro Sonny Rollins, backed by half of the soon-to-emerge Modern Jazz Quartet (pianist John Lewis and bassist Percy Heath) and drummer Roy Haynes. Davis's work is, as always, replete with interest but it is not always technically convincing, as the by-turns fragile and moving "Blue Room" demonstrates. By the time he recorded the four 1953 numbers with trombonist Sonny Truitt and tenorists Al Cohn and Zoot Sims he was much more assured, and this session has a happily relaxed feel amidst its cogency. Lewis is on hand here too, his lissom, stealthy lines a constant asset, and fellow MJQ-ist Kenny Clarke drums superbly. It would be a year or so before Davis hit the first of his many and varying peaks, but the nine cuts show that he was already a class act, not least in the way his music brought out the best in his colleagues whatever their stature. --Richard Palmer
