   インディアナポリス在住のローカル・ミュージシャンだったウエスは、30代半ばになってようやく世間一般に知られるようになった。飛行機嫌いで家族思いのため、けっして故郷を離れなかったからだ。しかし同地を訪れたキャノンボール・アダレイがそのプレイに感激し、リヴァーサイド・レコードのオリン・キープニュースに録音を進言、そこから新たな運命が開かれた。
   本作は、ウエスの名を決定的にした60年録音のセカンド・リーダー作。オリジナル4曲を含む選曲もいいし、トミー・フラナガン、ヒース兄弟を含むメンバーも申し分ない。
   オクターヴ奏法で有名になったウエスだが、実際はシングル・トーンによるソロ、オクターヴ奏法、コード奏法をミックスして演奏するのが特徴である。その結果、ウエスの演奏はドラマティックかつストーリー性を持った。ピックを使わずに親指で弾くのも専売特許だ。本作にはそうした特質がすべて盛り込まれており、ウエスの魅力のすべてを堪能できる。これぞ間違いなくウエスの最高傑作だろう。（市川正二）

　ルイ・アームストロングのトランペット演奏を分析してどうのこうの言う人が少ないのと同じ理由で、ウェスのギターのすごさも分析してどうの、という域を完全に脱している。

　我々にはジャズ・ギターの常套句的なフレーズが何の苦も無く次から次へと湧き出て、そのスピード感はそれが完全に天然のものであることを示している。練習してうまく弾けるようになったのではなく、こういう風に弾けるので弾いているのだ。
　チャーリー・パーカーにしろジャズは超えられぬ巨人が最初の頃に出すぎたかも。

　今はこういう奇跡の瞬間の記録がとりあえず残っていることに感謝するしかない。　
　　　必聴。

ウエス・モンゴメリーの代表作といえばフルハウスやロードソング、ハーフノートなどいくつかの傑作を挙げることができるが、ジャズのエッセンスを真に伝えるアルバムといえばこれが最右翼であろう。ピアノがトミー・フラナガンというところもミソである。トミ・フラこそ傑作請負人。ロリンズのサキ・コロ、コルトレーンのジャイアント・ステップス、J.Jのブルー・トロンボーンなど、それぞれのプレイヤーの畢生の傑作のサポートをしている稀有なピアニストである。それにしてもここにおけるウエスは神がかっている。エアジンにおける脅威のテクニック、D-ナチュラル・ブルース、ウエスト・コースト・ブルースにおけるブルース・フィーリング、ポルカ・ドッツ・アンド・ムーンビームス、風と共に去りぬなどスタンダードでの歌心。どれをとってもこれまでにないジャズ・ギターの新境地を聴かせてくれる。オクターブ奏法やコード奏法など多彩なテクニックで演奏の幅を広げ、あたかもホーン奏者のような存在感を示したのである。夭折しただけに後のイージーリスニング路線に早く転換したことがやや悔やまれるが、ウエスの精神は後のジャズギターに大きな影響を及ぼしたといえよう。

ウエス・モンゴメリー。ジャズ・ギター界を、オクターブ奏法という革命的な奏法で震撼させながらも、そのプレイの余りの革新性ゆえに、とうとう追随者が一人も現れなかったという、孤高のギタリスト、まさにone and only な存在である。このアルバムは彼がその奏法を確立してゆく時期の貴重な記録となっている。演奏曲目は誰でも知っているスタンダードの名曲とブルーズ。特に、Polka Dots And Moonbeams,Four On Sixなどではオクターブ奏法がアドリブ・プレイの中で見事に披露されている。ジャズ・ギターを愛する者、ジャズギターを志すものであれば必聴の名盤といえるだろう。
