When Miles Davis cut this quartet session, he was nearing the formation of his first great quintet, the one with John Coltrane that would go into a recording frenzy in 1956 and create five amazing LP releases before Davis signed with Columbia Records. Without a second horn in his group, Davis found plenty of room here to stretch out, seldom straying from his middle-register wooziness. Bassist Oscar Pettiford, schooled in Ellingtonian and bebop complexities, keeps the music active and agile, making this a contrast-filled session. The quartet's "Night in Tunisia" is a great take on Dizzy Gillespie's warhorse. --Andrew Bartlett


Album Details

This was a forerunner of the Miles Davis Quintet as it was his first session with Red Garland and Philly Joe Jones. By the fall, John Coltrane and Paul Chambers would come aboard to help form the first of a continuum of great Davis working groups. On 'A Night in Tunisia' Philly Joe used special sticks with little cymbals riveted to the shaft. OJC/Fantasy Records.

ジャズについてなんて何一つ知らなかった時分に、カバーのシンプルな写真に魅かれて購入した。思い返せばラッキーな出会いだった。

スピーカーから最初の曲が流れ出した瞬間、とても幸せな気持ちになった。難しいことはわからないけど、シンプルで暖かみのある音を耳にした途端、見ず知らずの他人と突然仲良くなってしまったような感覚に襲われた。初めてブルーハーツのファーストアルバムを聴いた時の感覚にちょっと似ていた。

音楽には色んな解釈があって然るべきだが、ひょっとしたらジャズファンのマイルスに対する評価体系は確立されてしまっているのかもしれない。ただ、私がこのアルバムから受け取ったのは、遊び心と飾らない幸福感だった。ただ聴こえてくる音やメロディーに身をまかせる楽しさが、このアルバムにはつまっている気がする。コアなファンの評価はともかく、そういう楽しみ方が出来るアルバムじゃないだろうか。

世間では結構評価の低いアルバムです。確かに地味かも知れないが、このマイルス唯一のワンホーンアルバムはジャケのマイルスの雰囲気ままに（翌年のワーキンでは電気屋の社長みたいでしょ！）不良でチャラチャラしてて女に手が早くて軽薄、そうまるでリーモーガンのような伊達男のマイルスに出会えます。あのチュニジアの夜のような濃いい曲も軽妙にこなして（コレが嫌いな人もいるでしょうけど）すぐ後のコルトレーンを擁するオリジナルカルテットがアップテンポの曲で少しもっさりするのに比べて、個人的にはずっとかっこいい気がしています。
"Will you still be mine?"なんて「よお、マイルス、ハクイスケがオメエのこと見てやがるぜ！」とつっこむフィリ-ジョーに「あのアマはやばいぜ、やめとけよ、」とさますガーランド、「なあに、まあ見てなって」とトランペットをひっつかんでハクイスケに寄り添っていくマイルスという映像が見えてきませんか？全く渋くないがかっこいい、にくいね！

1955年6月7日録音。『来るべき姿』を想像させるワン・ホーンのマイルスである。

このアルバムは村上春樹の処女作『風の歌を聴け』に登場する。『僕』が『鼠』にプレゼントする3枚のレコードの中の1枚である。プレゼントしたのは、

・『カリフォルニア・ガールズ』の入ったビーチ・ボーイズ
・グレン・グールドのベートーヴェンのピアノ・コンチェルト第3番
・『ギャル・イン・キャリコ』の入ったマイルス・デイビス

である。この3枚を組み合わせるあたり既に村上春樹が只者でないのが分かる。

レッド・ガーランドのピアノとフィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズのドラムも冴えて、半世紀の時を超えマイルスのペットが息を吹き返す。それはまるでエチケットの反対側に檻が溜まった古びたボトルに寝かされていた50年前の『シャトー・マルゴー』が見事なサーブで甦ったかのようだ。

そこでずっと輝け、マイルス。ただ一言、そう言いたくなってしまう。
