『グリーン・ドルフィン・ストリート』はビル・エヴァンスの特徴でもあるリリシズムだけでなく、硬派のサウンドを聞く事もできるアルバムです。
ジャケットの写真の美しさが際立っていますが、演奏もシャープで多弁です。

ピアノはビル・エヴァンス、ベースがポール・チェンバース、ドラムがフィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズ、というトリオです。所謂マイルス・グループのメンバーで、マイルスの代表作である1959年3月にセッションを持った『カインド・オブ・ブルー』の直前に収録した作品です。そうした収録時期が演奏スタイルには大きく影響していると感じましたね。

表題の３曲目の「グリーン・ドルフィン・ストリート」が一番素晴らしいですね。軽やかで、雄弁なピアノを聴くことができます。ビル・エヴァンスの特徴でもロマンティシズムも随所で感じとれますし、フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズのブラシを使った演奏がとても印象に残りました。
「知的で洗練されたジャズ」というビル・エヴァンスの個性が如何なく発揮された演奏で、この1曲を聴くだけでも値打ちがあるアルバムに仕上がっています。

1曲目の「あなたと夜と音楽と」も好きですが、他にあまり印象に残る曲が少なかったのでしょうか、『グリーン・ドルフィン・ストリート』自体はレコード化されずに15年ほどお蔵入りしました。

「グリーン・ドルフィン・ストリート」のセッションの完成度の高さを思うとお蔵入りしていたのが不思議なぐらいですが、今こうして聴くことができるのは幸せです。

この日のビルエヴァンスさんは乗っている。
普段の知的かつリリカルなピアノの音とは一線を画している。かなりバリバリに弾きまくっている。これもまた良しである。

クレジットをよく見るとバックのメンツが違っている。
有名なエヴァンスのピアノ・トリオ、例えば、ポートレイト・イン・ジャズ、エクスポラレーションズ、ワルツ・フォー・デビーでは、ベースがスコット・ラファロ、ドラムスがポール・モチアンの二人に固定されている。しかしながら、このピアノ・トリオ・セッションでは、マイルス・デイヴィス・クインテット時代のエヴァンスの元相棒だった、ポール・チェンバース（ベース）、フィリー・ジョー・ジーョンズ（ドラムス）がバックを付けている。流石にこの二人は良くスゥイングする。そのビートに煽られてあのエヴァンスも勢いに任せてガンガン行く。そこがジャス的で面白く素晴らしい。

初めのスタンダーズ６曲が、そのチェンバース、フィリー・ジョーとの録音。１９５９年の録音で、チェット・ベイカーのセッションで久しぶりに出会った三人が、プロデゥーサーのオリンキープニュースの勧めで小遣い稼ぎ？でやっつけたものらしい。あの美しいビル・エヴァンスのイメージを崩さぬ為？１９７０年代半ばまで未発表とされていた曰く付きの音源だ。

残りの１曲はエヴァンス自作の作品で、１９６２年にベースにロン・カーター、ドラムスにお馴染みのフィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズ、テナーサックスにズート・シムス、ギターにジム・ホールを迎えたクインテットセッション。エヴァンスらしく、一ひねり二ひねりを加えた珍しいブルース。

いつもと違うビル・エヴァンスがいて実に興味深い一枚だ。

全体を通してスウィンギーな演奏で、サポートのメンバーの性格がでていて面白い。このトリオでもっと演奏してほしかったと思うくらいです。
ぜひ聴いてみてください。
