1963年物です。
エヴァンスのソロ・ピアノと言えば、グラミー賞を取った『Alone』が知られていて、そこでは厚みのあるソロを聴くことができます。
かたやグラミー物、かたや無名のアルバムなんですが、なぜか、こちらのほうがいい、と感じるのです。何度も聴き比べてみましたが『Solo Sessions』のほうが好きです。

冒頭の曲、"What Kind Of Fool Am I?"・・・なんだか、”My Foolish Heart"に似た題名で、静かに、ひとつひとつの音を確かめるように弾き始めるのが印象的です。珍しく"My Favorite Things"も取り上げています。「スパルタカス、愛のテーマ」も聴くことができます。

・・・誰に聴かせるでもなく、ひとり、部屋でピアノを弾くビル・・・

半開きのドアから聞こえる音を、彼に気づかれないように息をひそめて聴いている・・・

そんな情景を想像させるようなアルバムだと思います。

このアルバムに収録されている曲は１９６３年１月１０日に収録されたものです。一度はオクラ入りしてしまい、ビル・エヴァンスの生前、公式に発表されたことはありませんでしたが、こうしてリリースされたことは嬉しい限りです。

不慮の交通事故によりスコット・ラファロが急死し（１９６１年７月６日）、１９６２年４月４日に、ソロ・アルバムをリリースする目的でいったんソロが演奏されたことがありましたが、その時はわずか４曲が演奏されただけで、演奏は中止されています。

ここでの演奏は、その時の延長、といったものではなく、Ｒｉｖｅｒｓｉｄｅとの契約が切れ、Ｖｅｒｖｅへ移籍する時期に、Ｒｉｖｅｒｓｉｄｅで残っていた未消化の企画の一つとしてなされたものです。
（ＣＤ「コンプリート・リヴァーサイド・レコーディングス」のライナー、オリン・キープニュースの書いた一文に詳しく載っています）

つまり、この「Ｔｈｅ　Ｓｏｌｏ　Ｓｅｓｓｉｏｎｓ」のピアノ・ソロが演奏された時期には、エヴァンスは決して「失意のどん底」にあったわけではありません。

そういう事実をふまえて聞き直してみると、決して悲しげな演奏には聞こえないはずです。確かに「Ａｌｏｎｅ」と聞き比べると、演奏にバラつきがあるような気がします。

でも、訥々とした中にも力強さがあり、曲によってはスウィンギーで、「さらさら」と弾いているような「Ａｌｏｎｅ」より、何かしら心に響くものがあるように感じます。

夜遅くに、ふと棚から取り出して聞きたくなる、そんなアルバムです。

ビル・エヴァンスのピアノを味わうのに最適といわれるソロ・アルバム。有名なのはVerveに残した「アローン」なんだけど、あれはちょっと隙がなさすぎ。もちろん昔のＬＰのＢ面一杯を占めていた「ネバー・レット・ミー・ゴー」だんだんソロが進むにつれどんどん情感がのってきてあれも最高なんだけど、、、、
ラファロの死後まもなくということと、Liverside最後のセッションといった事情も絡んでエヴァンス自身が非常に赤裸々に自分をさらけ出した演奏を繰り広げる。とくに繊細な「マイ・フェイバリット・シングズ」を筆頭にえもいわれぬ情感漂うナイーブな演奏が全編に漂っているということであえてこちらのアルバムのほうをオススメしたい。
