最初にヒットした「Straight Up」をラジオで聴いたときには、この曲はいいけど声が甘すぎて他の曲はダメなんじゃないか、と思いました。しかし、他の曲を聴いてみるとリズム感がすごく良くて、声に力があると感じました。

Janet Jacksonの振付師として一躍有名になったPaula Abdulの歌手デビューアルバム。本作には6つのシングル作品を収録、うち4作が全米NO.1ヒットを記録するという歴史的快挙を成し遂げました。 (『Straight Up』『Cold Hearted』『Forever Your Girl』『Opposites Attract』)

当時Debbie Gibsonと人気を二分していた彼女。Debbieに比べると多少歌唱力は劣りますが、キュートで特徴のある声質、そして本格的なダンスパフォーマンスで才能を遺憾なく発揮していました。“踊れるアイドルシンガー”というポジションを築き上げたことが人気につながったように思います。

本作は、ミディアムバラードの『Next To You』を除き、アップテンポのダンスナンバーで固められています。今でも決して色褪せない洗練されたつくりで、至極楽しめるものばかり。ただ、一律同系統のダンスミュージックのアルバムという点で、飽きる飽きないは大きく分かれると思います。

ここで、デビュー曲『Knocked Out』に注目したいと思います。この曲は、80年代末から90年代にかけて一世を風靡したヒットメーカー、Babyface制作によるもの。ダンサブルなリズムとキャッチーなメロディー、そしてどこか哀愁漂うエレクトリックなアレンジが印象的。セールスこそ振るわなかったものの、この官能的ですらある哀愁のビートは、他にはない魅力だと思います。

ビデオクリップも必見。特に、オープニングでタップダンスを披露する『Straight Up』や、アニメーションキャラクター、MC Skat Kat(The Wild Pair)との掛け合いが面白い『Opposites Attract』など。また、Paulaのバラードをもっと堪能したいという方は次作をどうぞ。
