3rd『パークライフ』がイギリスで爆発的なヒットを記録し、その勢いのままわずか1年半で届けられた4thがこのアルバム(しかも収録曲数は15曲!!)
名作『パークライフ』に比べると、洗練されすぎて全体の曲の風味が損なわれている感がある。だがそれは勝手に『パーク〜』と比べただけの話であって、決してこの『グレート・エスケープ』が駄作な訳ではない。そもそも連作(2nd『モダン〜』を含めると三部作)なのだから、作品の本質を見極めれば必然の産物と言えなくもない。
かのアルバムの先行シングルにおけるオアシスとの確執も、なければないで後の《成長したブラー》はなかっただろうし、これが一つの区切りになったと考えれば、決してネガティブな面ばかり見ることもないと思う。話がズレたが、つまりこのアルバムが、そして曲がクソなわけでは全くない。
1.「Stereotypes」はグレアムのギターとシンセが強烈な作用がキモチイイ、ボウイやザ・カーズの影響がモロ出のロック!2.「Country House」はブラー最大のヒットであり最大のお荷物曲。ただ内容は元FOODレーベル社長デイヴ・バルフェ(94年に音楽業界引退し、その後もブラーの成功により金を稼げている事)を皮肉った曲。もろにキンクスな曲。あとはニューウェーブ調なシンセが支配していてあのアクが強くイカしたグレアムのギタープレイが聞けるのはせいぜい1.と9.「He Thought Of Cars」と10.「It Could Be You」ぐらいというのが哀しい…だがボノもフェイバリットに挙げる壮大なバラード7.「The Universal」や、ティアドロップエクスプローズやXTCの要素があるシンセパンク12.「Globe Alone」は聴いていて単純に興奮する。過度であっても乏しい部分を補える要素があるのだから結果オーライだと思う。ともかく名作

ライフ三部作の三作目だが、唯一タイトルにライフとは付いていない。
この時期の彼らはエスケイプする事＝ライフ（生きていく為に必要な事）だったのかもしれない。2nd「モダンライフ〜」でブレイクのきっかけを掴み、3rd「パークライフ」で成功を収めた彼らは自分たちを取り巻く環境に苦悩した。その苦悩に満ち溢れた中でも期待を裏切らず、きっちり良質のブリット･ポップアルバムを作り上げた。デーモン及び４人の才能たる所以だろう。しかし、2nd,3rdの自然に溢れ出てきたポップさから比べると、ポップ感に囚われ過ぎて悩んだ故に弾き出されたポップ感と思えなくもない。
2曲目カントリー・ハウスの歌詞で神経症だから田舎で生活したいと比喩する。この時期のデーモンそのもの。
そしてこの4th「グレイト・エスケイプ」発表後にblurは実際にブリット・ポップからの《壮大な逃避行/大脱走》をした。

~「ゼルダの伝説　ムジュラの仮面」はゼルダなんだけどゼルダとは全く違うゲーム。このアルバムも，ブラーがブラーを演じたような，巧妙な仕掛けに満ちている。

リリース当時，このアルバムに対して妙な違和感を感じたから全然まともに聞かなかったのだけど，最近久しぶりに聞き返したら，その事に気づいて戦慄を覚えた。

ここまでポップミュージックを~~徹底的に批評した作品を僕は寡黙にして知らない。~
