   本作『Thrak』は、80年代の再結成後にリリースされた『Discipline』『Three of a Perfect Pair』『Beat』を引き継ぐ内容となっている。オリジナル・メンバーであるロバート・フリップ、エイドリアン・ブリュー、トニー・レヴィン、ビル・ブラッフォードに、スティック（ベースに似た楽器）のトレイ・ガンとパーカッションのパット・マステロットを加えた編成だ。音楽的には80年代のクリムゾンのアルバムと似ているが、民族的なリズムへの関心は薄れ、弦楽器の出番が多くなった。ブラッフォードとマステロットは精力的なプレイで存在感を発揮しているが（「B'Boom」は必聴）、どちらかと言えばサポート役に回っている。ブリューは、ソロ活動でそれなりの成功を収めた後での参加となるが、これで以前のポジションに完全復帰。彼はすべてのボーカルを担当するほか、バックで個性的なギター・ワークを披露するなど、大車輪の活躍ぶりだ。（Adem Tepedelen, Amazon.com）

Thrak finds the quartet responsible for Discipline, Three of a Perfect Pair, and Beat in the '80s reassembled, with Trey Gunn on stick (a basslike instrument) and Pat Mastelotto on percussion joining original members Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, and Bill Bruford. Thrak is musically quite similar to the King Crimson albums of the '80s, but it has less of a tribal, rhythmic focus, giving the bulk of the space to the stringed instruments. Bruford and Mastoletto are present and active (check out "B'Boom") but seem to play more of a supporting role. Belew, back from his somewhat successful solo career, resumed his dominant position, providing all the vocals and plenty of his distinctive backward-sounding guitar work. --Adem Tepedelen

　1995年。スタジオライヴのミニ・アルバム「VROOOM」に続いて遂に姿を現したフル・アルバム「THRAK（スラック）」。1980年代のビート・クリムゾンに近い編成での復活で、前評判では期待と不安が交錯していたが、結果として、非常に満足行くアルバムに仕上がった。

　最大のポイントは、初期の叙情性がある程度復活していること。特に歌モノでメロウな旋律がふんだんに使われている。エイドリアン・ブリューは歴代シンガーの中で一番キーが高く、普通に歌えばクリアな高音の美声シンガー。それがキャッチーで素直なメロディーを歌うため、ポップですらある。

　ドラマーが２人居る「ダブル・トリオ」という荒々しい編成はこの際、あまり意識しなくていい。インスト曲のバトルではうなりを上げるリズム隊だが、ヴォーカル曲では意外と大人しくまとめられており、リズムばかりが尖っていた1980年代の姿はない。

　ジャズの影響を感じさせる不協和音を効果的に使ったインスト曲は、前評判通りのメタル・クリムゾン振りだし、一転してヴォーカル曲は、描写力の高いメロディーで、どれも良い曲に仕上がっている。

　のっし、のっしと歩く恐竜を見事にサウンドにした「ダイナソー」、この世の中を動かす歯車＝人間を醒めた目で眺める「People」、「宮殿」のダークさをちょっと思わせる小曲「Inner Garden I & II」、浮遊するメロディーがフロイドっぽい「Walking On Air」、そして相反する物を対比した、不思議な歌詞の切ないバラード「One Time」。

　インストだけじゃダメという人でも、これだけポップ・ソングとして良い曲が揃っていれば納得するであろう。

　既存の壁を常に打ち破ってきたクリムゾンにしては優等生すぎる…　批判したがるファンはそう言うかも知れないが、素直に、良い曲が多い作品だと思う。「宮殿」、「レッド」 に続く３つ目の名作が誕生した！と言わせてもらおう。

前作のヴルームがわずか四日でつくられたものなのに対し、やはり、このアルバムは構成などが考えられていると思います。六人編成のダブル・トリオのメンバーもヴォーカル以外はその分野のトップレベルばかりなので、迫力があります。九十年代以降のキング・クリムゾンは聴かず嫌いの人もいると思いますが、このＣＤは聴いて損はないのではないでしょうか。やはり、全盛期の「レッド」などと比べてしまうでしょうが、キングクリムゾンではない音楽を聴くつもりで聴いてみてはいかがでしょうか。
