Often viewed as the band's last great album, Tattoo You contributed one true classic, "Start Me Up," to the Stones' canon. The song, still used as a concert finale, begins with a fat Keith Richards guitar riff and ends with a leering Mick Jagger murmuring about a woman who could "make a dead man come." The rest isn't as consistent as, say, "Sticky Fingers," but the fast-paced "Hang Fire," the surprisingly non-sexy "Waiting on a Friend," and Richards's "bitch"-filled "Little T&A" make this the Stones' best '80s release by far. Released in 1981, it was the right album at the right time, with strong singles just after MTV began. With typical savvy, the Stones maneuvered gently into the video age. --Steve Knopper

このアルバムはツアーにでるために前作からほとんど間をあけずに大急ぎで製作されたものです。ボツテイクを掘り起こしたものとなったのもそのため。Start me upがレゲエだったというのは有名ですが、以前ミックはインタビューで否定してました。キースみたいに適当にある事ない事を言う人ではないので本当かも。ボツテイク集といっても昔の音源をそのまま収録したわけではなく、ボブ・クリアマウンテンによって８０年代初頭最新の音に生まれ変わっています。ネイバースでは、ドラムビートを強調するあまりハイハット(八分音符をきざむ)の音が消されており、妙に沈黙した間のある曲になっています。Start me upは言うまでも無い名曲ですが、スクールメイツが踊りそうな明るいポップなノリの２曲目や、珍しくロニーがクレジットされたブルージーな５曲目、さらに４曲目のキースは最高です。最近のライブでもこれをやってくれないかと期待しているのですがやってくれません。後半のバラードも「友を待つ」を筆頭に名曲ぞろいです。ライブ・リックスにWorried About You のライブテイクがありますが、還暦のミックがファルセットで「ベイベェー！」とシャウトするのを聴くとあらためて楽曲のすばらしさを感じます。ちなみに、黎明期ＭＴＶ用に製作されたStart me upのビデオ冒頭で炸裂するミックの踊りのダサさは、ストーンズ史に残る素晴らしさなので一見の価値があります。

ストーンズをリアルタイムで聴いた最初の作品という事もあり、思い入れがあるアルバムです。
「スタート・ミー・アップ」がビルボードのチャートを駆け上がって、これはカッコイイ！買わなきゃと思い
即買いしたんだけど、当時１６歳の自分にはなかなか泥臭い（バタ臭い）感じがして最初は、あまり聴き込め
なかった思い出があります。

聴き所としてはＡ面１曲目「スタートミーアップ」はもちろんですが、Ｂ面１曲目「ウォリットアバウトユー」
から始まり「友を待つ」で終るＢ面の、ミデアムテンポのブルージーな流れがとても心地よい。
Ａ面のロック調の流れもいいんですが・・・・・。

アナログレコードで聴いていた頃は、Ａ面、Ｂ面別物として割り切って聞いていましたが、ＣＤ時代になって
Ａ面、Ｂ面と関係なく全曲通しで聴いてみると、違和感があり何かまとまりがないような気がするのが残念。

全曲素晴らしい出来映えです。
ストーンズの中でもっとも洗練されたアルバムではないでしょうか。
このアルバムからストーンズを聴き始めると、他が荒っぽく感じてしまうかも知れませんが、その荒っぽさ、ルーズさもストーンズの大きな魅力に感じていただけるのでは。個人的にはこのTATTOO YOUとBLACK AND BLUEが全盛期のストーンズの中で対極をなす優れたアルバムだと思っています。
