ブルックナーの遺したシンフォニーの中でも、この８番はどちらかと言えばオーソドックスな部類ではないでしょうか？１９８８年のライブ盤です。ベルリンフィルは数多くの名指揮者―古くはフルトヴェングラー、最近ではアーノンクールやヴァント―とこの８番を録音しており、どれも名盤の名に恥じない名録音ですが、この録音は、若々しいサウンドがとても魅力的です。『え？これ本当にベルリンフィル？』と耳を疑いたくなるほど、輝かしい響き…勿論この楽団特有の重厚なサウンドはそのままに…を楽しめます。解釈もバレンボイムらしい癖の少ないすっきりとしたアプローチとコントロールに好感を持てます。カラヤン亡き後の、低迷を危惧されていた時代の録音ですが、どうもこの楽団は常任が振るよりも、ゲストコンダクターが振った方が味わい深い演奏をする印象があるのは僕だけですかね？最近は奇人？ラトルに率いられ、ガラっとカラーが変わってしまいましたが、よき時代の面影を匂わせるものとして、お奨めしたいです。終楽章のラスト２分間はオーディオのボリュームに充分お気を付け下さい。オーディオチェックにも使えそうな、ハリとエッジの利いた優秀な録音であることも最後に付け加えます。
