Robertson cashed in The Band's rustic tones in for a lush, beat-box womb created by coproducer Daniel Lanois. His own weird, almost spectral voice, also turned out to be the right vehicle for the words he'd been handing to others for so long. 私は十分におっさんだが，The BandのリーダーとしてのRobbie Robertsonはあまり知らない．ただ，本作が出た1987年当時に受けたインパクトは今もはっきりと記憶している．なにせ，プロデューサがDaniel LanoisとRobbie Robertson自身，ほとんどの曲のリズムをManu KatcheとTony Levinが奏で，金字塔アルバム"So"でポピュラリティを獲得したPeter Gabrielが1曲でヴォーカル参加，"The Joshua tree"によってロックシーンでギラギラと輝くことになるU2の面々も2曲で参加しているという豪華さ．そして，かつてのThe Bandのメンバーも脇を固めている．Maria McKee，The BoDeans，Neville Brothersも参加．とどめがミックスのBob Clearmountain．当時の流行りのアーティストと音づくりのスタッフを総動員した，今振り返れば非常にバブリーな作品．

しかし，これだけのコストをかけただけあって曲のクオリティも高い．Robbie Robertsonの「ヘタウマ」なヴォーカルに馴染むのにはちょっと時間がかかったけど，馴染んでしまうと，彼の声の出す味がたまらない．ギターも渋くてうまい．全体的に南部の土臭さを漂わせているものの，リズムから得る硬質な感じは，Peter Gabrielの作品っぽくもあり，その点がオールドファンの鼻につくかもしれないが，上記のアーティストの作品のどれかが好きな人には一聴の価値があると思う．好みが分かれる作品だとは思うが，80年代のロックにおける一つのランドマークであることは間違いないと思う．

ブロークン　アロウは名曲だ。だが他の楽曲は・・。80年代ロックな楽曲、一本調子なボーカル、大袈裟な歌詞、豪華だが薄っぺらい演奏・・・。あれ、ロビーってこんなもんだっけ？これ以降現在に至るまで彼の音楽はすべてサントラまでフォローしているが、結局THE　BANDの素晴らしさが何だったのかロビーが一番判ってなかったんじゃないだろうか・・？　ビッグピンク、ブラウン、ステージフライトなどの名盤の数々・・は当たり前だがロビー一人の成果ではなかったことを痛感した。

ラストワルツで得たザ・バンドのグループとしての名声を利用してミュージックビジネスでの成功を目論んだロバートソンのソロ第一作。ゲフィンレコーズの大金を掛けた大掛かりなプロモーション、発表までのじらし作戦（レヴォンヘルム、リックダンコのソロ作が好評を博した後の満を持してのリリース）も相俟って、世間の大注目を浴びた作品だった。
さてその中身はと言うと、昔からのザ・バンドファンからは総スカンを食うものだった。あのThe Weight,The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,King Harvest等の名作を書いたロバートソンとは別人が書いたようなつまらないドラマテック性に欠ける独りよがりの作品群。大して意味のなかった衝撃（笑劇？）な彼の出自のカミングアウト（母方がモホークインディアン）。そんなアメリカ人ごまんといますよ。それに輪を掛けるような、ロバートソンの薄っぺらなボーカル。多くのザ・バンドファンが拒否反応を示したのは当然だった。あのザ・バンド時代のロビーは一体どこへ行ったのか？しばらくしてファン達が気づいたことは、ザ・バンドのあのサウンド作りの中心にいたのはロバートソン１人ではなかったということ。他の４人のメンバーも曲作り、アレンジ等にかなり関わっていたこと。そう考えると、ロバートソン１人で作った本作も結構それなりに頑張っているということがわかる。かなりの大金を掛けて作ったらしいけど、セールスの方は全くだめだったらしい。残念ながらザ・バンドの名声を独り占めし換金するという、"Robbery Robertson"氏の目論見は失敗したようだ。
