私はバリーアンドリュース在籍時の初期のファンなのですが、一番聴く機会の多いのはこのアルバムになります。トッド・ラングレンのプロデュースによりXTC本来の毒気が抜け切った骨抜きみたいな柔らかく耳当たりの良い音は、はっきり言って熱心なファンには不満でしょうし少なくともメンバーは激怒していたくらいなので、相当に不満だったようです。しかしながら無駄な装飾を取り去って素材の良さだけで勝負したこのアルバム。異色中の異色ではあるのですが、何となくなんですがフグのさしみのような旨味を感じます。(クレーム付くか？) アルバム全体の統一感や曲の流れ、聞き終わった後の余韻までを含めて完成度はすこぶる高いです。アルバムのカラーを決めている Ballet For A Rainy Day は大好きな一曲ですが、これもまたXTCらしくない曲なのですね。あれ？

エリック・クラプトンがクリーム時代に使用していた
「サイケＳＧ」についてちょっとした逸話を。
クラプトンからトッド・ラングレンに譲られたＳＧですが
その後レコーディングで使用されています。
といってもトッドのアルバムではなく
彼がプロデュースした英国のポップグループ、ＸＴＣの
「スカイラーキング」というアルバムに於いてです。
曲は「that's really super,supergirl」で
ギタリストはデイブ・グレゴリーという人です。
ポップ音楽に於ける使用ですので
クラプトンとは似ても似つかないトーンで奏でられており
アームまで使われていますがこれはこれで
素晴らしい演奏です。
ちなみに「スカイラーキング」は名作といわれていますので
機会があれば一度聞かれてみてはいかがでしょう。
