クイーンといえば華麗なヴォーカルや きらびやかなギターオーケストレーションが話題になるが、完成度の高い楽曲群もその評価の対象となる場合が少なくない。

思い起こしてほしい。あなたのＣＤレパートリーの中で、最初から最後まで聴きとおせるアルバムを、はたしてあなたは何枚お持ちでしょうか？

この作品は間違いなく そういう類のものです。

数あるクイーンの作品の中でも、いわゆる"クイーンらしさ"を損なわず、メンバーそれぞれの個性がそれぞれに反映された曲が粒ぞろいな楽曲集は、この作品以外に見当たらない。

特に１曲目の「プレイ・ザ・ゲーム」。フレディ作。独特なコード進行、サウンド。そしてそれらの奇抜さを微塵も感じさせない美しいメロディ。彼の人生を思わせる素敵な歌詞。完璧。

いつも車に積んでます。リズム中心の はやりの楽曲に疲れたときに取り出します。

そしてそれは、ある風景を思い出したり、今の自分を励ましてくれたり、喜んだり涙したり、といった音楽の"奇跡"を再認識できる至福の時間。

当人は死んだがその作品は永遠になくならない とは、つまりこういう事なのではないかと思ってます。

1978年に「ジャズ」を発表したクイーンは、それまでのキャリアを総括するような初のライブアルバム「ライヴ・キラーズ」を79年に発表。ここでクイーン史上何度目かの“リセット”が行われ、アメリカ市場を強烈に意識したこの「ザ・ゲーム」が1980年に発売された。
多くの方が指摘しているとおり、私を含めたデビュー当時からのファンは驚き、失望した。M-3はそのままシックの「グッド・タイムズ」だし、なぜフレディがロカビリー（M-5）をやらねばいけないのかさっぱりわからなかった。
しかし、シングル、アルバムともに世界的な大ヒットを記録。彼らは念願の全米ナンバー1を手にした。
古くからの日本のファンにとってクイーンはデビュー時から「スーパー・グループ」だったから、逆に世界的な音楽ビジネスの中での彼らの位置づけや苦悩を、私たちは分からなかったのかもしれない。
今聞いてもM-1とM-10の美しさには感心するが、途中でスキップしたくなる曲もかなり多い。

このアルバムで文字通りの世界的スターとなったクイーンは、この後、深い試行錯誤の森へと入っていく。

クイーンの歴史の中でよく取り沙汰されるが、彼等がシンセサイザをフィーチャーした曲作りに踏み出した一枚だ。シンセ不使用の呪縛が解けた今、きらびやかさや重厚さが増したのを感じはするものの、決してシンセの魔力に振り回されない彼等がここにいる。シンセの利用で #1「プレイ・ザ・ゲーム」はスケールが大きくなって宇宙感すら漂う。#2「ドラゴン・アタック」、#3「地獄へ道づれ」の二曲はホット・スペースの流れを汲むファンクな香りがいい。加えて今回はロカビリーへの挑戦 #5「愛という名の欲望」ありと進化に貪欲な姿勢を感じさせる。イントロのアコースティックな部分と中盤のクイーンらしい分厚い演奏の対比が素晴らしい最終曲#10「セイヴ・ミー」は混沌とした現実世界から発せられたメッセージとして、いまなお燦然と輝いている。
