　1978年にこのアルバムがリリースされたとき，二つのことに驚かされました。まず一つはジャケットです。
　そこに写っていたマイク・オールドフィールドは，長かった髪の毛を切り，髭を剃り，こざっぱりしたジャケットを着ており，それまでの世捨て人然としたイメージがまったくなかったのです。まさに「誰？こいつ」って感じでした(^^;)。
　そしてもう一つは，曲の長さです。それまでの３枚のアルバムもA面B面で１曲という大曲でしたが，このアルバムはなんと２枚で１曲という更に倍率アップの長さになっていたのです。ちなみにトータルで７２分以上あります。
　それだけ長いと，アナログ盤の時はA面聴いたらひっくり返してB面，それが終わったらレコードを換えて......と，かなり面倒臭い状況だったので，part1からpart4まで通して聴くことは滅多にありませんでした。
　それもあってか，個人的には前３作と比べると評価の低いアルバムだったんですよね。
　しかし，こうしてpart1からpart4まで通しで聴くことができるＣＤで聴いてみると，『Incantations』という曲がPart1からpart4までトータルして一つの曲であるということが良くわかり，改めてこのアルバム（曲）の魅力に気付かされました。じっくり聴いても良いけれど，BGMとして流しても，これがまた気持ちが良いんですよね。

　マイク・オールドフィールドの前期４部作の最後を飾るに相応しい名盤です。

"Ommadawn"発表後、途中"Boxed"を挟みますが、3年の時をおいて1978年に発表されたのがこの"Incantations"です。
"Tubular Bells","Hergest Ridge","Ommadawn"の初期３作が基本的にMike独りで作られたものであるのにたいし、この"Incantations"では、盟友David Bedford（Hergest Ridgeにも参加していましたが）指揮によるオーケストラとクワイアが導入されていたり、Pierre MoerlinのドラムやJabulaによるアフリカン・パーカッションが参加していたりと、より豪勢で開放的な音づくりとなっています。部分的に"Orchestral Tublar Bells"に近いところもありますが、全体を通して聴くとやはりMike Oldfieldならではのものと納得させられます。

この作品は、それまでのLP1枚につき1曲という大作主義の総決算であると同時に、80年代以降の作品にも通じる箇所（Mikeプラスdrumsといった点）が随所にかいま見える興味深い作品です。名作であることはいうまでもありません。
この作品発表後、Mikeはバンドとオーケストラを率いた大規模なヨーロッパツアーを敢行し、その模様は"Exposed"に収められています。

私がMike Oldfieldのアルバムの中で一番好きなのが本アルバムです。

Part1.

希望に満ちた旅路。
方舟に乗って居る様。
海を連想させる。
コーラスが絶妙に美しい。

Part2

繰り返される自由に動き回る高音の笛の音。
バックの音がさりげなく良い。
次に、クラシック調の精妙な弦が鳴って、鼓動の音に繋がる。
次に、荘厳な音が鳴る。弦の高音。
コーラス「Ru-u-Na,Ru-Si-Na」。
次にボーカルへと続く。空に向けて歌っているよう。

Part3

ギターがメインのパート。
親しげな音で始まる、仲睦まじく。
本アルバムの中では一番明るい場面かな。
次に、民族楽器（？）の演奏が始まり、エレキギターの演奏が走る。
民族楽器とエレキギターの混奏は、アフリカのジャングルを連想させる音だ。
時折鳴る「シャラン」とした音も良い。
ギターの音は永遠を感じさせる。

Part4.

ベルの様な音がメインで延々と続くパート。
それはとても綺麗で、感動的だ。
ギターの音は、どこかへ旅立って行くかの様だ。
次に、微妙な音色の変化したベルの様な音。
宙に浮く様だ。音が響いていて、とても綺麗。
ギターのパートに入る。烈しく、狂おしい。
ラストにリズムと音程はベルの時と同じまま、
息をつぎ吐きしていりう様な音になる。
ギターが演奏される。
暫くしてから鳴るギターの音は、やはりどこかへ旅立って行くかの様だ。
この部分は臨死体験の感じと同じ。
（私は幼い頃、臨死体験をした）。

文句無しに星５つです。
