5.0 out of 5 stars British Jazz Rock 史上においての重要作品はこれだ, 2002/3/2
アメリカのウエザーリポートに対するイギリスからの答えがこれだ、みたいな文句で当時売られていたような気がしますが、全然比較できませんねえ今考えると。でこの作品はイギリス人のジャズ職人の屈折したねじれた感覚を見事非凡なテクニックに乗せて表現することに成功した希有な作品。具体的にはやはり、フレットレスベースで摩訶不思議な変態サウンドを出す個性派のパーシージョーンズ、この人がサウンド全体のカラーを決めている。ドラムがのちポップスターになってブレイクするフィルコリンズ。ミニモーグとローズ担当のロビンラムレー、この人のシンセソロは無茶で過激です。このアルバムがアメリカのダウンビート紙で絶賛されたのは、音楽性がほかのバンドと似てなかったことが大きい。あとすごいとこはある種のカオスっぽいバンド全体のかもし出すパワーとグルーブ＝はちゃめちゃパワー、が全体に流れていること。どんなリズムも軽々とこなすドラムの力量も見のがせない。フィルはジェネシスでは発散しきれない自由なインプロビゼーションをここで解消してたにちがいない。そんなわけでBrand X＝無印変態商品なのではないかとさえ思える。おもちゃ箱をひっくり返してしまったようなあのおったまげ感覚＝音楽には非常に大切＝ハプニング感覚が随所に出ている。また彼等独特の無国籍サウンド＝かなりフェイクまるだしもいい味だしてて最高＝たぶん彼等なりのパロディー。現在ブランドXのようなバンドはなかなかない、トライバルテックが唯一とアダムホルツマンとドレッグスとサイモンフィリップスだけか？テンションの高いJazz Rockが最近少ないとお嘆きの方々に昔のマハビシュヌみたいに火花散らすインタープレイをお届けするブランドXぜひとも聴いていただきたい作品です。

プログレのドラマーはどうしてもジャズ系のアプローチをしてみたくなるもののようだ。ビル・ブラッフォードの「One Of A Kind」もしかりだが、そういったアプローチで最も素晴らしい作品を残したのがジェネシスのフィル・コリンズの創ったこのBRAND Xだと思う。特にデビュー作の本作は素晴らしい出来映えだ。

特に変拍子を多用した中のパーシー・ジョーンズのベースは必聴に値する。フレットレス・ベースの極地はこのアルバムの彼の演奏だと断言したい。「Euthanasia Waltz」と「Born Ugly」が特に傑作。

ピーガブが抜けた後のジェネシスでフィル・コリンズはヴォーカルを担当していましたが、彼はもともと凄腕ドラマーでもあったので、そっちでのキャリアも積みたいと思っていました。そんな時誘われたのがこのバンドでした。そのため、実際にはこのバンドはフィル中心のバンドではありません。勘違いされてる方もいるようなので先に述べておきます。
メンバーはフィルに加えて世界屈指（イギリスではなくて）の超絶技巧を持つフレットレス・ベーシスト、パーシー・ジョーンズ。エッジの効いた速引きギタリスト、ジョン・グッドサル。妖しい音色のミニムーグを操るロビン・ラムリーの４人です。当時、フィルとパーシーのコンビはイギリス最強のリズム隊とでも呼ばれていたそうです。
アルバムは疾走感あふれる「Nuclear Burn」で幕を開けます。その後はその緊張感をほぐすかのようなゆったりとした曲が続きます。そのため次作「Morrocan Roll」や「Livestock」ほどのインタープレーの応酬はないですので、もっと超絶技巧を楽しみたい方には上記のアルバムの方をお薦めします。
