The first Lemonheads album yields little hint of the poignant, countrified pop that was to come on the It's A Shame About Ray and Come On Feel The Lemonheads records. At this early stage, the Lemonheads were indistinguishable from any number of noisy guitar bands that were beginning to emerge in regional centres across America, the vanguard of grunge. Evan Danso's combo had an obvious local reference point--they formed in Boston--and Hate Your Friends clearly owes their citymates, the Pixies, as big a debt as it does Seattle grunge pathfinders Green River. Ultimately, though, it's an aimless if amiable noise, the soundtrack of a young band's search for its own voice. --Andrew Mueller
