This first volume of Chandos's Grainger edition includes some of his best-known pieces--the broad-flowing, almost Brahmsian "Colonial Song" in a particularly lush orchestration; the 1921 version of the Passacaglia on "Green Rushes", with its percussive piano part; and the suite In a Nutshell, with its strangely titled opening movement "Arrival Platform Humlet" that flows and judders as if it were being made up on the spot. There are also some rarities--the sonorous "Duke of Marlborough" fanfare that opens the disc and three pieces based on Kipling settings, "We Were Dreamers", the elliptical lament "There Were Three Friends" and "Fisher's Boarding House". Hickox brings out the originality of all these works--the whole point of Grainger is his exploration of musical sound worlds and the BBC Philharmonic have the virtuosity required to do him justice. Hickox also remembers that Grainger was a man of his time and place--sentimentality is a part of what this music is for as well, as long as it is not laid on with a trowel. --Roz Kaveney

オーストラリアのメルボルンで生まれ、イギリスとアメリカで活躍したピアニスト兼作曲家、パーシー・グレインジャー（Percy Aldridge Grainger 1882 - 1961 ）の作品をシリーズとして録音リリースしているシャンドス・レーベルの第1弾アルバムがこれ。本盤は「管弦楽曲集・その１」ということになる。収録曲は、モールバラ公爵のファンファーレ、コロニアル・ソング、イングリッシュ・ダンス、シェパーズ・ヘイ、3人の仲間がいた、フィッシャーの水夫宿、われら夢見し者たち、収穫の讃歌、楽しい鐘の音、ウォーキング・テューン（吹奏楽版）、「かいつまんでいえば」組曲、緑の茂み。計12曲。演奏はヒコックス指揮BBCフィル。録音は1996年。

日本ではグレインジャーの名前は、歴史上のピアニストとしていくぶん知られていると思う。しかし、作曲家としてはどうだろう？まずぱっと思いつく曲がないだろう。そんな作曲家の作品を立派な演奏と録音で紹介するのはさすがシャンドスである。同じレーベルでは、例えばバークリー親子の作品のシリーズも面白かった。そちらもヒコックスが指揮していたし、この辺の上手さは折り紙つきだ。

楽曲は、華やかな雰囲気を持ったもので、深刻な諸相を描く部分はほとんどない。かろやかに歌う弦楽合奏、古典的な和音で、あっさりとしたメロディ。また隠し味的に活躍するピアノやオルガンの含まれたサウンド作りが面白い。冒頭の「モールバラ公爵のファンファーレ」はガーシュウィンを思わせる“時代的ファンファーレ”だ。「コロニアル・ソング」の前半部分の叙情性はどこか日本の童謡にも通じるような懐かしさを覚える。その後も華やかな金管に打楽器や木琴が添えられるような楽曲が多く続く。通して聴くと「もうちょっと落ち着きたまえ」と言いたい気もするが、グレインジャーという人の作曲スタイルというのはよくわかる。また管弦楽書法にも通じていて、ピアノの編曲ものばかりに腕を発揮したわけではないのだということも再認識できる。

やや「軽音楽」的で、クラシックとしては決してメジャーなレパートリーではないとも思うが、祭典等の機会音楽の様な雰囲気を十分伝えてくれる。
