ＮＹはパラディアムにおける、数夜に渡る伝説の76年の年末コンサートをアルバム化したものがこれ。

驚異の声域と世界一ソウルフルな喉、ファンキーなカッティング、ブルージーなアドリブと天が三物も与えた驚異の男レイ・ホワイト、ジャコを凌ぐテクと地虫が這うような変態的な音色を併せ持つパトリック・オハーン、そしてビキニブリーフと悪魔仮面のボジオとエディ・ジョブソンの超テクプログレ組、という鉄壁の４人を軸に更にメンバーを拡大しているが、これがまた豪華過ぎる面々。
元メンバーの超絶マリンバ娘ルース・アンダーウッド、デイヴィッド・フリードマンとダブル・イメージの結成を画策中だったデイヴ・サミュエルズ、ブルース・ブラザーズバンドのルー・マリーニ、ロニー・キューバーとト??・マローンはサタデイナイトライヴバンド、そして泣く子も黙るブレッカーズ。

ナレーション担当のＣＮＮの名キャスタードン・パルドもいた（笑）。
御大のギタープレイも一番脂が滴ってた頃で、バンドの音楽性も現代音楽的超難度スコアとジャズ＆ファンクの各人の自由さが一番いい形で融合されている。

打楽器音楽史上に残る名曲「ブラック・ペイジ」も、レイの伝説的名唱が聴ける「イリノイの浣腸強盗」も、一番キレてた頃のマイケル・ブレッカーの超絶ソロが聴けるラストナンバーも、ボジオとザッパの掛け合い漫才パートがあるファンキーナンバー「おっぱいとビール」も、全てがここに入っている。

違う日の違う場所の違う曲の演奏を違和感なくつなぐ驚異の編集テクも含め、ザッパの頭の中は一体どうなっているのか？というセンス・オブ・ワンダーに満ちた、まさに人類史上に残る大傑作。
不満なのは、コンプリートでアルバム化してくれなかったことだけだ！

ザッパのアルバムはほとんど聴いてますが、そのうえで、このアルバムは少々過大評価されているのではないかと非難を覚悟で書きたいと思います。ザッパ史上最高のバンドだった70年代前半のバンドが解散し、テリー・ボジオ体制になってからの70年代後半のザッパは不遇だった。レーベルともうまくいってなかったし、時代はディスコ~パンクの激動期で、そのなかでザッパはオールドウェーブだった。バンドメンバーも思うように集めることができず、好盤「Zoot Allures」はボジオとザッパの二人でつくったようなものだった。この「イン・ニューヨーク」の一見豪華なメンバーは、固定メンバーでパーマネント・バンドを組めなかったことの裏返しです。つまり、ボジオとオハーン以外は基本的に助っ人にすぎないわけです。だから、このアルバムの演奏は、行きとどいたアレンジよりも、長々とした即興に頼りがちで、あまりタイトとはいえない。音はいいけど、「ホット・ラッツ」や「ロキシー」の熱狂には遠く及ばないし、「シャット・アップ&プレイ・ヤー・ギター」に比べても演奏は劣ると思う。

ということで、この作品は歴史的意義はあると思うけど、決してザッパのベストではないと思う。ボジオ期ならやっぱり「シーク・ヤブーティ」と映画「ベイビー・スネイクス」でしょう。

'77年発売のライヴ盤のCD化。
CDはLPからの代替品だった'91年に大胆な改訂版を制作したことにたいへん驚きました。
全曲リミックス/編集はもちろん、4（+1）曲の追加、アルバム全体の再構成とオリジナルからは始めと終わり、
ジャケットだけが残ったという感じ。
オリジナルがドライな質感だったのに比べライヴ感が増し、会場の雰囲気が味わえる気がします。

この録音のザッパバンドは、当時のツアーメンバーにホーンセクションを加えた大所帯でスペシャルな感じが出ています。
もちろんザッパですから単にいつもの曲を豪華にしました程度に終わらないのが凄いところ。
伝説の難曲「ブラック・ペイジ」、伝説の浣腸強盗、伝説のレコード会社のとのトラブル。
このアルバムを語る切り口はいくらでァ?出てきます。

初めてのザッパアルバムがこのアルバムでも後悔することは無いと思います。
面白さ倍増の為に対訳付の日本盤で。
